Michael Carrick has a key role in Carlos Baleba's development at Manchester United.

Let's look at the midfield options this season...More Videos

Carlos Baleba has been a bright spark in Manchester United's recent games despite the results for the team being disappointing.

The Cameroonian midfielder joined the club from Brighton at the end of the summer transfer window but did not make his debut immediately due to an ankle injury.

A debut off the bench came against Tottenham Hotspur before he started his first match away at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The 22-year-old then started again in the Premier League against Leeds United. Michael Carrick will be hoping that Baleba can start completing 90 minutes as he approaches full fitness.

The Reds are in need of major improvements after a poor start to the season and Baleba will release quickly the amount of pressure he is under at Old Trafford.

Baleba under "good pressure"

Baleba has a youthful energy that hasn't been seen at Manchester United often in recent years. When he was brought on for his debut against Spurs, the midfielder didn't look like he could keep himself still.

He is energetic and has the physicality that United need in their midfield, but we have seen players crumble before under the pressure at Old Trafford.

Former United player Quinton Fortune believes that Carrick would have already given the summer signing important advice on how to deal with the weight of being at the club.

Speaking to Boyle Sports, Fortune said: "There will be a lot of pressure on Carlos Baleba, but that's what happens when you sign for United, it's part of it. The pressure is higher compared to Brighton, but he has good people around him at the club.

"I'm sure Michael Carrick will just tell him to play his game, stay calm, and ignore the outside noise. Playing under pressure at Manchester United in the Premier League is a privilege.

"It's good pressure. That's why they signed him, he showed at Brighton he can deal with it. Now it's just a matter of overcoming whatever injury he has to get fully fit, because when he's fit, we all know what he's capable of."

Baleba and Mainoo to partner

Baleba has yet to start a game alongside Kobbie Mainoo, who has been unavailable through injury for the last two encounters, but that pairing seems like it will be Carrick's favourite going forward.

The two players can complement each other, with Mainoo being able to take more responsibility on the ball while Baleba covers more ground. The new signing has also shown that he can provide some added quality on the ball, too.

With the likes of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos as options as well, United's midfield actually looks in a positive place for the first time in several years.

However, ironically, now that problem has been solved, other issues are emerging within the squad, particularly on the wings and in defence.

Carrick will need to find solutions to those problems if he is going to stay in charge, but the midfield personnel is something that the United boss will be looking to get the most out of for the rest of the season.
