Ole Gunnar Solskjær has backed Michael Carrick to succeed at Old Trafford, but he seems more than happy to step if necessary.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær has regularly been hailed as one of, if not the best, Manchester United managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Under the Norwegian, United finished second to Manchester City and were recognised as one of the best counterattacking sides in Europe.
While he failed to win a trophy during his managerial stint at Old Trafford, he gave fans some Ferguson-like magic. That night in Paris will never be forgotten.
Michael Carrick, alongside Mike Phelan and Kieran McKenna, assisted Solskjær and has since become full-time head coach himself.
While many feel Carrick is destined for the sack, Solskjær is still backing his old coach for now.
Solskjær backs Carrick
When Rúben Amorim was dismissed, Ole Gunnar Solskjær was in the running to take interim charge until the end of the season alongside Ruud Van Nistelrooy and the eventual winner, Michael Carrick.
Speaking on that time with TV2 Sport, he said: "When I spoke to United, I praised Michael as well. I said, 'If you choose him, you will get a good man.' I think he did the same for me too.
"Neither of us was desperate to get the job. We would probably both have stepped in if they asked. At that moment, the discussion was about being interim manager until the end of the season."
Carrick was handed the full-time job in May, but has failed to win any of the last nine and was close to losing his job on Monday, with many feeling the international break could be the end of his time at Old Trafford.
"Michael has what it takes to take that club forward," Solskjær said. "I think he is the right man. He understands the club, understands the fans and knows what it takes."
Fans have continued to support Carrick despite the poor run of form, with "It's Carrick, you know" regularly heard alongside negative chants about Jason Wilcox, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Glazers, and the new stadium.
Solskjær has "unfinished" business at Man Utd
While the treble-winner seems happy for Carrick to be in charge, he also claimed he feels he has some "unfinished" business at Manchester United.
"I feel that I have something unfinished," he said. "Of course it would have been great to have the opportunity again."
But will that opportunity come again?
Michael Carrick looks set to be sacked, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann touted as potential replacements. But as Manchester United fans will know, changing the manager will not solve every problem at Old Trafford.
The owners and Jason Wilcox have been subject to criticism from fans in recent months, with many pointing towards an awful summer transfer window as to why Carrick is currently struggling.
The strategy of signing attackers in one summer, midfielders in the next and defenders the year after has not won fans over.
Since INEOS has been at Manchester United, they chose to stick by Erik ten Hag before sacking him two months into the new season, appoint Rúben Amorim mid-season despite claims he wanted to wait until the summer, stick by him until he called out Wilcox in a post-match press conference, and appoint Michael Carrick, whose managerial résumé reads: "Middlesbrough".
