Pep Guardiola has praised Manchester United defender Luke Shaw in a recent press conference.

Would Iliman Ndiaye be a good partner on United's left hand side for Luke Shaw?

Luke Shaw played only 27 games in the two seasons prior to this one, and the left-back has struggled with injuries throughout his career following a serious leg break against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League over 10 years ago.

This season, however, Shaw has started all 36 of Manchester United's Premier League games.

The Englishman was used as a left centre-back in Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, before moving back to left-back following the appointment of Michael Carrick, who had adopted a back four system.

He has been one of United's most underrated players throughout the campaign, rarely ever putting a foot wrong.

Guardiola praises Shaw

Manchester City Pep Guardiola spoke highly of Shaw in a recent press conference where he spoke about the FA Youth Cup final.

Shaw, along with teammates Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, was present at the Joie Stadium as United fell to a 2-1 defeat.

"United always plays really good,” Guardiola said, speaking on the performance of Darren Fletcher's team.

“Happy to see, in the stands, Omar [Berrada], Jason Wilcox – the most important part in this club for the last decade, both of them.

“Jason, in the academy, did an incredible job. Omar, the right-hand of Ferran [Soriano], had been top and seeing top class players from United, Bruno [Fernandes], Luke Shaw – one of my favourite players – Mason Mount, and the manager Michael Carrick.”

Should United keep Shaw?

Before this season, Shaw's career at Old Trafford seemed to be more or less over. Injuries had riddled Shaw, and it looked like there was no way back for him.

Despite this, Shaw has become a pivotal figure in Carrick's team and has been one of United's better players so far this campaign. Even more impressive than his form, though, has been his ability to stay fit.

United will be looking to revamp their left-hand side this summer, with both a left-back and left-winger on the agenda.

Shaw has the ability to deliver wonderful crosses into the box, but lacks the mobility to constantly get high up the pitch. He now mainly plays an important role in deeper areas.

Matheus Cunha has been playing a lot of minutes on the left wing since Carrick's arrival, and if that is to continue into next season, an attacking left-back who could hold the width would be the ideal profile, as this would allow Cunha to move into more central areas where he operates best.

United have also been linked to both Iliman Ndiaye and Morgan Rogers as potential reinforcements on the left wing. Just like Cunha, both of those players operate better in more central areas.

United are said to be interested in West Ham's Malick Diouf, who suits the profile of an attacking left-back.

With United set to return to the Champions League next season, squad depth will be crucial, and Shaw has shown that he still has the quality to play an important role despite his limitations. With his contract set to expire in 2027, United should keep him for one more season before parting ways.
