Manchester United have made three signings in the summer window so far, strengthening Michael Carrick's squad with the likes of Karl Darlow, Andrey Santos, and Youri Tielemans. The latter is definitely the most exciting, given his Premier League experience.

The transfers have certainly improved the squad, but the majority of fans agree that more players will have to be brought into the club if the Red Devils are aiming to be competitive in both the Premier League as well as Europe.

Having sufficient squad depth will be key if United are aiming for success in the upcoming campaign, as it has been seen time and time again how much a few injuries can hamper a side especially with increased amount of fixtures.

A full-back and striker will be United's main priorities when looking to bring in new signings, but Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed two players who he thinks his former club should sign that don't play in either of these positions

Christian Romero has been a decisive figure amongst fans of the Premier League ever since his arrival at Spurs in 2021, but overall has been a bright spark in what has been a tough period for the North London side.

However, Romero is set to leave Spurs this summer, with Atletico Madrid currently favourites to secure the 28-year-old's signature amid a £35 million asking price from the North London club.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes revealed why he thinks the Argentinian could be a useful target for the Red Devils.

"You might laugh at this, and I might get stuck for this, but I would go and sign Christian Romero from Tottenham.

"I know he’s a nutter, I know he’s got disciplinary issues, but he can be a very good centre-half and someone that Michael Carrick could really calm down. They’re talking about 30 or 40 million quid for a player who has been centre-half in a World Cup final.

"I know he’s got disciplinary issues, but I would go and get him. I think they’re desperate for a centre-back; the current ones aren’t good enough."

It would certainly be a signing that would raise a few eyebrows amongst the United fanbase, as Romero has shown on many occasions he can be a liability, but at the same time, is one of the division's best defenders on his day.

The second player whom the Old Trafford legend thinks United should be aiming to sign is Adam Wharton, who has been linked with a move to Manchester for the past couple of seasons, and Scholes 'Can't believe' his former club isn't actively pursuing the 22-year-old.

"I can’t believe they’re not trying to buy Adam Wharton. Sandro Tonali would have been my first choice, but with him gone now, Adam Wharton looks perfect to me."

Crystal Palace have reportedly valued their star midfielder at an eye-watering £85m, so it seems unlikely the Red Devils will be willing to pay that amount after already signing Santos and Tielemans so far in the window.

With just under two weeks to go until the start of the new Premier League campaign, it is expected that United will announce at least one new arrival before their first competitive fixture against newly promoted Hull City on August 22.
