Manchester United are returning to Champions League action for the first time since December 2023, after spending the last few seasons outside the competition.

Michael Carrick's men finished third last campaign in the Premier League, although a loss to Hull City, a win against Ipswich Town, and a late draw against Everton have seen the club start this season in mixed fashion.

However, a welcome return to Europe's elite competition will see United's Reds host Sabah FK at Old Trafford on Thursday evening, a fixture that could prove to be well-timed for the Reds after an initially mixed run of results.

Following the Sabah tie, United will then host cross-town rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford, giving Carrick a lot to think about regarding possible starting XI rotation in midweek.

Below is the latest regarding United's injury list ahead of the Champions League clash.

Amad

What happened: After playing well in pre-season, Amad has missed all three fixtures in the league so far due to an injury sustained in training.

What's been said: Roundtable reported last month that initial tests showed Amad could be out for up to six weeks.

Possible return date: Saturday, 10 October vs Tottenham Hotspur.

Marcus Rashford

What happened: Marcus Rashford was unexpectedly substituted against Everton in the 70th minute after a fantastic performance on the left flank.

What's been said: Carrick explained after the game that he was withdrawn because the winger was "feeling a bit of something."

Possible return date: Thursday, 10 September vs Sabah.

Carlos Baleba

What happened: Prior to signing for United, midfielder Carlos Baleba injured himself in pre-season training with Brighton.

What's been said: Baleba is expected to return to fitness in the next few weeks and could make his debut before the international break.

Possible return date: Wednesday, 16 September vs Brighton.

Matthijs de Ligt

What happened: Matthijs de Ligt suffered a back injury in November 2025 and has not played since. He underwent a back operation toward the end of last season.

What's been said: The Dutch defender has been seen in training with the first-team squad, although it is only the early stages of his rehabilitation.

Potential return date: Late October.

Manuel Ugarte

What happened: Manuel Ugarte suffered an ACL injury while at the World Cup with Uruguay, and has started his rehabilitation after undergoing surgary.

What's been said: Reports suggested at the time that his injury recovery could last around nine months, although the timeline will depend heavily on how well his rehabilitation goes.

Expected return date: N/A
