AC Milan and Juventus ignite a January transfer battle for Joshua Zirkzee as Ruben Amorim weighs a high-profile reunion to reshape his attack amid ongoing squad rotation.
As the international break comes to an end, Manchester United will be glad that most of the squad has come back unscathed, with other injured players coming back.
Senne Lammens and Leny Yoro are the two who starred the most during the break, with Yoro beating his Belgian club teammate on his international debut for France, with Zinedine Zidane raving about the young defender.
As for members of the squad who did not go on international duty, the likes of Carlos Baleba and Matthijs de Ligt have returned to senior training and even took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport.
All the focus will be back on the Premier League with the club gearing up for a big fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. For some players, the next few months could be their chance to either fight their way back into the starting eleven or potentially put themselves in a good position for a January move away.
Amorim would "welcome" a reunion with Zirkzee
It feels like ever since his first January at the club in 2025, Joshua Zirkzee has always been linked with a move back to Serie A, where he thrived for Bologna, which earned him the move to Manchester United.
In the final few weeks of the summer transfer window, it looked as though the Dutchman was nearing a move to Fiorentina or Juventus, but both deals collapsed as they went for Beto and Nick Woltemade, respectively.
Calciomercato are reporting that AC Milan are eyeing up a move for the striker in January, and Ruben Amorim would "welcome" a reunion with the player. Currently, the only option at striker other than Goncalo Ramos is youngster Francesco Camarda.
However, they are not the only Serie A club interested, as Talk Juve has reported that the Bianconeri are ready to compete with Milan for Zirkzee's signature in Juventus.
Need to reinvest
Manchester United need to re-invest or find ways of raising funds if the Zirkzee deal is just a loan because, as recent times have shown, injuries in the forward areas have meant the club has not been attacking with the same flow as last season.
While part of this is down to poor selection from Michael Carrick at times, the lack of Benjamin Sesko and Amad has meant that often Bryan Mbeumo, who operated better as a striker in pre-season with Amad on the right, has been put on the wing with Matheus Cunha playing up front.
But whether it is Cunha or Zirkzee off the bench leading the line, the club lacks that natural presence that stays in the forward areas and is an outlet that makes runs, which is what both Sesko and Mbeumo do.
Left-back is naturally the biggest problem area, but bringing in an emergency striker option is needed to fill that gap in the forward areas.
