Now leading AC Milan, Rúben Amorim is reportedly targeting a reunion with Leny Yoro as he attempts to bolster his defense following a turbulent Manchester United exit.
On 1 November 2024, Manchester United appointed Rúben Amorim as head coach after Erik ten Hag left. The Portuguese manager arrived at Old Trafford with a strong reputation after success at Sporting CP, including impressive UEFA Champions League performances. United hoped he could rebuild the team, restore consistency and return the club to the top of English football.
However, Amorim struggled to make the desired impact. Results remained disappointing, and United continued to suffer from inconsistent performances. His tenure eventually saw him record the lowest win percentage of any permanent Manchester United manager in the Premier League era, increasing pressure on the Portuguese coach as the club failed to meet expectations.
After around 14 months in charge, Amorim was dismissed in January 2026 following a tense press conference after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. INEOS decided to make another managerial change, appointing former United midfielder Michael Carrick to guide the team through the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
Carrick quickly introduced major tactical changes, replacing Amorim’s 3-4-3 with a more familiar 4-2-3-1. He also returned several players to positions better suited to their abilities, helping the team become more balanced and effective. The adjustments led to immediate improvements in performance and results.
United’s turnaround proved remarkable, with the club earning more Premier League points than any other team from January until the end of the season. They finished third and secured Champions League qualification, highlighting the impact of Carrick’s changes and raising questions about the difficulties Amorim faced.
Rúben Amorim eyes Leny Yoro reunion
After leaving Manchester United, Rúben Amorim was announced as the new AC Milan manager in June and has enjoyed a decent start at the San Siro, with his side sitting 4th in Serie A, four points behind Inter in first, undefeated, with five wins and three draws.
Despite this, the Rossoneri have endured a difficult start to their Europa League campaign, winning just once and losing two, including a recent 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Bournemouth.
Much like at United, Amorim quickly stamped his authority on the squad and has created another 'bomb squad' of players deemed surplus to requirements at the Italian giants, with Fikayo Tomori surprisingly among them.
As reported by Calciomercato, AC Milan are exploring a potential summer move for Yoro, with Amorim keen to bring the centre-back to Italy, having previously praised the young French centre-back as a "top, top, top player."
The outlet reports that Milan believes a fee of around £45 million could be enough to open serious negotiations.
Yoro should be absolutely untouchable
Manchester United's defence has been very poor this season, picking up just one clean sheet in 12 competitive games, their only clean sheet coming against Azerbaijani side Sabah in the Champions League in September.
While injuries since joining Manchester United have slightly hampered his development, the 20-year-old already looks much better this season, despite his performances being criticised at times.
His recent debut for France is an encouraging sign, and his display at right-back against Leeds demonstrated why United invested so heavily in him, with the Frenchman constantly being in the right place to clear any and all Leeds crosses.
United signed Yoro for an initial £52 million, so Milan's reported £45 million offer makes little sense, as United could be selling a player who was wanted by clubs like Real Madrid before he has even discovered his full potential.
While it is expected that there will be a lot of movement in the defence next summer, letting Yoro leave could very well be the nail in the coffin when it comes to fan sentiment towards the club, and should instead look for centre-backs to compliment the Frenchman, and allow the 20-year-old to continue to develop and improve.
