The end of the Premier League season is approaching and Manchester United are in pole position to secure Champions League football, which could be great news for Shea Lacey.

The Champions League will be KEY for Shea Lacey next season...

Manchester United's defeat to Leeds earlier this month led to some concerns that Champions League qualification could go to the wire.

Despite being in a strong position due to good performances under Michael Carrick, the Reds would have only been four points in front of Chelsea if they lost their clash with Liam Rosenior's side on the weekend.

However, it was United who secured the three points in that game, even though Ayden Heaven was the only available centre-back, and now there is a 10-point gap between the Reds and sixth-place Chelsea.

With only five remaining games this term, Carrick's side need six points to secure Champions League football for next season. If results go their way, it might not even take six points.

Lacey set for end-of-season boost

United could well be in a situation where their final games hold little weight, and that could provide Carrick with the opportunity to give youngsters a chance in the side.

Shea Lacey and Jim Thwaites were on the bench at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night and they may get some minutes to impress if United's Champions League status is confirmed in the coming weeks.

Lacey, in particular, looked very promising in cameos made earlier in the season and it would be great to see him involved. Some fans believe he could be a valuable squad player heading into next term.

The right-footed winger was sent off in an FA Cup clash against Brighton in unfortunate circumstances but wowed supporters with his ability and confidence off the bench against Burnley and Aston Villa.

It would not be the first time that United will have provided opportunities for youngsters on the final day of the season. In 2017, Jose Mourinho gave debuts to the likes of Angel Gomes and Josh Harrop against Crystal Palace.

Why Academy players can help Man Utd next season

Kobbie Mainoo is currently the only regular contributor in the first-team who comes from the club's academy and that should change next year.

Importantly, with the club set to be playing in four competitions once again, there needs to be sufficient depth within the squad.

Rather than buying squad players for £30-40 million, the Reds should be able to trust a couple of youngsters to contribute in the squad.

That will then mean that the transfer funds can be focused on the priority positions that can strengthen United's first eleven, with the midfield being the major focus.
