Following a humiliating defeat to Como, the United captain targets management’s tactics and a stagnant club culture while grappling with a shocking burglary at his home.
After an embarrassing defeat to Italian side Como in the Champions League, Michael Carrick's job is in serious danger.
Some thought the 4-1 loss would end Carrick's reign at Manchester United, but he is set to remain in charge for the match against Bournemouth on Sunday.
The mood was low after Wednesday's defeat, signalling that the end could be near. Not just in the match, but afterwards too, as Bruno Fernandes spoke to the media on multiple occasions, and his comments about the management and culture sparked a big reaction on social media and live coverage.
On Thursday, it was reported that Fernandes' home had been burgled on Wednesday whilst the United captain was still in Italy. Many have reacted with disgust and anger to the news, as it is shocking, but luckily Fernandes' family were not in the house and are safe. United are said to be supporting the player and his family in this situation.
United is not the same, says Bruno
As post-match coverage began, Carrick, Fernandes, and other players faced the media. They were all disappointed with the result and the manner of defeat, and Fernandes spoke strongly, adding to comments Lisandro Martinez made a week earlier.
Fernandes initially criticised the coaching team's tactical approach, saying they cannot give these kinds of players time on the ball in midfield. He also said the coaches, not him, should answer tactical questions, which led him to accuse the captain of shifting blame.
It has now emerged that he also he spoke about the club's culture with Italian media, and suggested that focusing on the past weighs heavily on it.
Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the United skipper said, "Everyone at the club must understand that it’s no longer the same. We’re no longer in the past and we must look to the future. We must create something different in the present.
"At this club, we focus too much on what was achieved in the past, but we are no longer the same.
"The club and the players must understand this. Unfortunately for us, especially the players, those who come think about winning trophies, matches, and reaching the highest level, but unfortunately it’s been very difficult at this club in recent years. That’s the situation.”
When assessing United's start to the season, he said: "It’s a very difficult moment for us, we’re not getting the points and results we want."
Fernandes was substituted in the second half by Carrick - a very rare occurrence. When asked about it, he said: "Nobody likes to leave the pitch, especially with a result like that.
"It was a very difficult match for us; it was almost impossible to play with the ball. We weren’t close enough to maintain possession and play in their half.
"Como were very brave in their man-to-man pressing, we never did that, and we gave them too many opportunities to play between our lines, thus managing to create chances to score."
Could Bruno be stripped of the captaincy?
In reaction to his outbursts, some pundits heavily criticised the PFA Player of the Year. Jamie Carragher labelled Fernandes "an absolute disgrace," and Wayne Rooney accused the Portuguese international of deflecting the blame, calling Fernandes and his teammates "selfish."
Understandably, Carrick was asked about the situation in his pre-match press conference today ahead of Sunday's tie against Bournemouth.
To this, Carrick said: "If I spoke to him or not, I don't think this is the time to go into that in much detail.
"The most important thing for me is the team, first and foremost, is the squad, is the dynamics in the squad, and, again, it's about the football club. I always do what's best for the football club. Whatever the situation is, I'll always do what's best for the football club."
This answer left some with question marks over Fernandes' position as captain, although it currently does not look like a change will be made. It will be interesting to see what side Carrick picks on Sunday, with a win his only option if he is to remain in charge.
