England announced on Friday morning that Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire had been called up to Thomas Tuchel's camp ahead of the March internationals.
Interestingly, the German has not called up a single United player to any of his England camps since taking charge in October 2024, but has ended this streak amid the club's brilliant form.
Maguire and Mainoo have started every single of Michael Carrick's nine games in charge, collecting seven wins, one draw, and one loss in that time.
Having previously played pivotal roles in England's recent successes on the pitch, it's brilliant to see the duo back in contention for the upcoming World Cup in North America.
Ahead of England's games against Uruguay and Japan later this month, Tuchel held a press conference to provide an update on his selection decisions.
When asked why he had yet to call up a United player for his England camps before this month, the England boss said: "It's good to make the point that it's nothing against Man United.
"It's just to acknowledge the achievement of Man United as a team. I think they have an outstanding run since Michael Carrick is in charge, and Harry and Kobbie are a big part of that.
"So, like I said, it's the last camp before the US. It's the last chance also for me to get to know new players, to learn about new players. Kobbie is one of them. Harry is not a new player, of course, in an England shirt, but new to me in a camp.
"I want to see them around other players. I want to feel them on the pitch. I want to see what they're capable of and learn about them to make a clear decision then in May."
While it would have been understandable if neither Maguire nor Mainoo had been in contention amid United's poor form under Rúben Amorim, their resurgence over the last two months is a testament to just how good both players are.
Maguire must be selected for the World Cup, even if only for his experience. The defender has 64 caps for England and is their all-time highest scoring defender with seven to his name.
In a squad that contains multiple young heads, having a player such as Maguire to help keep situations calm and push for a starting place is exactly what Tuchel needs.
As for Mainoo, he is a completly unique midifled profile that can rpovide a special and magical moment in the middl eof thepark.
He has been essential for Carrick in terms of maintaining pressure and consistently in the middle of the park across the last few months, and Tuchel would do well to understand that this would be a perfect option for England, too.
