Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ stunning 96th-minute debut strike denied Michael Carrick’s men a vital victory, leaving the Red Devils frustrated by defensive lapses ahead of a grueling fixture schedule.

Last-minute heartbreak for UnitedMore Videos

Manchester United dropped points again in the Premier League on Sunday after a late equaliser from Ainsley Maitland-Niles earned Everton a draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The former Arsenal man scored the goal of his life on his Everton debut, giving Senne Lammens no chance to stop it.

The point leaves United on four from a possible nine, which is disappointing given the favourable start. Michael Carrick's side also return to the Champions League this Thursday before a tough matchup versus Manchester City next Sunday, ahead of a packed few weeks before the international break.

The first half of today's match ended 0-0 with both sides fairly equal. United had moments and Marcus Rashford looked sharp on the left wing, but both teams lacked quality and the poise to take the lead.

United started the second half fast with Bryan Mbuemo scoring a brilliant goal in the 46th minute. However, then the intensity began to slightly drop from Carrick's side, allowing Everton to grow back into the match. Tyrique George opened his Everton account with a powerful strike in the 83rd minute to level the score. It then looked like a difficult position for United to come back from.

But United pushed for a winner, and it looked like they may have gotten it through substitute Benjamin Sesko. Luke Shaw made a great run down the left-hand side and perfectly hung the ball up in the box for Sesko to meet in the air. Pickford could not keep it out and the celebrations were of passion and relief.

Despite the late heartbreak, Everton kept pushing through stoppage time. Jack Grealish caused problems when he came onto the pitch and David Moyes' other substitutions all had a big impact.

None more so than Maitland-Niles. The ball fell kindly to him in the 96th minute on the edge of the box and the finish he produced was top class. Lammens could do absolutely nothing to keep it out, and the ball flew into the top corner to sink United at the death.

Fortune's frustration

Former United player Quinton Fortune joined MUTV for coverage of the match and expressed his disappointment with the result.

Although he reserved praise for the two goal scorers and Shaw, the ex-player quality pointed out that the side must work on stopping conceding so many crosses.

"It's a tough one to take because we started the second half so well. We pinned Everton in their own half and kept possession for much of the game.

"Both goals from Mbeumo and Šeško were brilliant. It was a brilliant cross from Luke [Shaw] for the second goal. We need to stop crosses better, and unfortunately, we were undone by a wonder strike in the final minute."

The match ultimately feels like a loss due to the way the game played out. United had chances and will be disappointed to concede two goals again.

More points dropped

The first three games of the season have been disappointing on the whole, although there have been some encouraging signs, particularly against Ipswich Town last week. To only earn four out of a possible nine points is not a great start and could show worrying signs for the season.

The next Premier League match for United will of course be the Manchester Derby and it will be their toughest test yet. The lapses in concentration and small mistakes we have seen at times so far this season can not be replicated then.

However, there were some positives to take away from today. As Fortune said, both United goals were impressive. Sesko's header and Shaw's cross was perfectly executed, and Mbuemo's close control and finish was devestating.

The control of the match seemed to slip away when Kobbie Mainoo left the field, and the attacking threat was not as strong when Rashford was substituted. With a busy schedule approaching, the whole squad needs to be ready to contribute and make an impact to achieve good results.
