Manchester United bounced back from their surprise 2-0 defeat to Hull City on the opening day with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. The result gives United an important early boost in their Premier League campaign.

United dominated the opening stages and created several chances, but struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities. Ipswich then stunned the hosts by taking the lead, with Leif Davis capitalising on some sloppy defending from Luke Shaw to finish past Senne Lammens. United responded before half-time when Marcelino Núñez's mistake allowed Matheus Cunha to start a counter-attack, with the Brazilian finding Bruno Fernandes, who calmly equalised.

Michael Carrick's side stepped up the intensity after the break and quickly moved ahead. Harry Maguire's effort took a deflection on its way into the net before Fernandes converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts a two-goal advantage.

Fernandes then completed his hat-trick when a deflected Bryan Mbeumo shot fell into his path. The captain composed himself before firing home to put United firmly in control and cap an outstanding individual performance.

Fernandes turned provider for United's fifth and final goal, playing Mbeumo through on goal. The forward kept his composure to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and seal a convincing 5-2 victory, giving United a much-needed response after their disappointing opening-day result.

After the early scare against Ipswich, midway through the second half, the contest was all but settled, as Carrick made a host of changes, bringing on Andrey Santos, Noussair Mazraoui and Benjamin Šeško.

While it's important to give first-team fringe players game time, Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney was disappointed that Shea Lacey wasn't handed any minutes after the game's result had already been determind.

Speaking to the United Stand, he said, "What I would liked to have seen which I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t see was Shea Lacey come on when the game was done.

"For young players, when the game is over, it’s an opportunity for them to go and get some minutes and go and show what they can do at that level.

"I would’ve liked to see Shea Lacey come on just to get a glimpse of what we’ve seen in pre-season.

"I know we got a bit complacent with their second goal but the game has opened up a bit, you get on the goal a little bit and you might get that goal which we saw with Rashford years ago when he got thrown into the team, got his two goals and kicks on from there.

"It’s little moments like that where you don’t get many times during the season where you’re able to do that. So that was a little bit of a missed opportunity."

Shea Lacey impressed for Manchester United during pre-season, even playing a full 90 minutes against PSG, and while you would like to see the next generation of talent get chances, it's likely too early for Lacey to get substantial minutes this season.

While the last 20 minutes of the Ipswich game looked like a great opportunity for the 19-year-old to get some game time, Carrick rightfully prioritised those who will have much more meaningful roles this season to keep up their match sharpness.

Manchester United are approaching the start of a packed schedule as Champions League football and domestic competitions begin, with United playing four games in ten days, including their Champions League opener against Sabah and an EFL Cup fixture against Brighton.

With Amad injured, Shea Lacey could be in for a decent number of minutes, with Bryan Mbeumo the only fit natural right-winger at the club. United face Manchester City just three days after their tie against European minnows Sabah, and, while Carrick won't want to underestimate their opposition, if a similar situation arises against the Azerbaijani side as it did against Ipswich, expect Carrick to rest Mbeumo ahead of the Manchester derby.
