Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has spoken out about Manchester City's cheating after they were found guilty of almost all of their 115 charges.

Attention has once again turned to Manchester United after a horrendous start to the 2026/27 campaign.

However, during the latest international break, there was hardly any discussion about Michael Carrick's struggling side and that was solely down to their neighbours.

Last month, it was revealed that Manchester City had finally been found guilty of 114 charges of financial breaches.

The Premier League revealed that City manipulated over £900 million in revenues and hidden costs between 2009/10 and 2017/18.

United's rivals won England's top flight division three times during that period and twice it was the Reds who finished second to the Cityzens.

United player knew about City's cheating, says Herrera

Ander Herrera was part of the United squad in 2017/18, who finished second to City, and the Spanish midfielder has been speaking about the charges.

Like many supporters, Herrera revealed that United players were suspicious of the activity across Manchester and were 'aware' of the cheating.

“Rules must be followed; what was happening wasn’t normal - we were all aware of it,” he said on El Camino de Mario, as per Sport Witness.

On paper, City were making record revenues during these years despite struggling to fill out the Etihad Stadium on matchdays.

“My friends couldn’t get tickets for Old Trafford, yet tickets for the Etihad were being given away for free," continued Herrera.

“I have nothing to say against the players or the manager; they deserve credit for what they’ve accomplished. They’ve tainted everything. The damage is irreparable.”

It must be a strange feeling for ex-players

United are a mess right now but it remains staggering how everyone is expected to carry on what they're doing after the guilty verdict was made public against City.

Enzo Maresca is enjoying himself in the dugout at United's rivals but there are question marks over what their games mean. The Premier League need to finalise a punishment, after the appeal process, as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, for players like Herrera, it must be a strange feeling. United players are not the only ones, those who represented the likes of Everton were denied the chance of playing Champions League football due to City's actions.

Ultimately, it is something that will only hurt the status of the Premier League. United need to focus on themselves and how they can improve going forward.
