Youri Tielemans has now been unveiled as Manchester United’s newest recruit, arriving with a wealth of Premier League experience and a reputation as one of the league’s most technically gifted midfielders.

Credit should go to the United hierarchy for identifying a Premier League-proven player who can strengthen the squad without the risks often associated with adapting to English football.

At 29, Tielemans brings leadership, composure and quality on the ball in equal measure.

As Tielemans is a player who dictates the tempo of games, this is a signing that reflects the brand of football Michael Carrick wants his United team to play - one that represents authority and control - one that will starve the opposition of possession. 

In Tielemans, United are also signing a player with the mentality to thrive at Old Trafford. Even as a prodigious youngster at Anderlecht, he was trusted with the captaincy, demonstrating leadership qualities well beyond his years. Those traits have stayed with him throughout his career - most recently, captaining Belgium at the World Cup.

Upon signing Tielemans, United’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox told club media: “Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years.

"He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United.

“Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad.

"We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”

It appears that United’s hierarchy believes Tielemans possesses the mentality and character to become part of the club’s leadership group despite being a new arrival. The group currently includes Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Tom Heaton.

Tielemans may not be the type of leader who commands attention through volume, but his influence comes from the standards he sets for himself and those around him - much like his manager was in his playing days.

That could prove particularly valuable following Casemiro’s departure, with United losing an experienced figure who provided leadership both on and off the pitch. While Tielemans’ style is different, his years of experience at the highest level, calm presence and ability to take responsibility in midfield could help fill the void left behind.

It is interesting to note that Tielemans has chosen to wear the No.18 shirt, taking it from his predecessor, Casemiro. At Old Trafford, that shirt number has become synonymous with experience in recent years. First Paul Scholes, then Ashley Young, followed by Bruno Fernandes, and most recently Casemiro. 

Big boots to fill, but boots, many believe he will be to handle.
