After resurrecting his career in Turkey with a string of stunning penalty saves, the Cameroonian shot-stopper faces a tug-of-war between a permanent transfer and Old Trafford redemption.
Manchester United are preparing for a squad overhaul this summer, which could start between the sticks.
The goalkeeping department, since the departure of David De Gea in 2023 until Senne Lammens joined this season, has been a nightmare for Manchester United.
First, Andre Onana, after a big-money move from Inter Milan, where he had just featured in the Champions League final. However, the move proved disastrous across the next two seasons.
Then, second-choice Altay Bayindir was given a stint in net towards the end of the last season and beginning of this season, but he too failed to make a mark before Lammens took his spot.
After being dropped by Rúben Amorim before the signing of Lammens, Onana was picked up by Trabzonspor on loan for the rest of the season.
Trabzonspor president wants Onana
Compared to his hellish stint in goal at United, Onana has been a much different goalkeeper in Turkey.
The Cameroonian has played 28 games and only conceded 34 goals, with six clean sheets in that time.
Most recently, the shot-stopper pulled off three impressive penalty saves in a shootout to send his side into the Turkish Cup semi-finals.
According to The Athletic, Trabzonspor president, Ertugrul Dogan is interested in opening talks to make the loan move premenant, and the penalty heroics has only cemented the case.
However, the player himself wants to reclaim his position as the United number one. Furthermore, financially, the Turkish side may not be able to afford the wages of Onana, which have increased by 25% with United back in the Champions League.
A necessary sale
Even if United were to get as little as £25 million for Onana, this is much-needed money to reinvest into the team.
With the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford potentially raising another combined £50 million, and players such as Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee linked with moves away, United could raise almost £100 million in sales.
The Mirror previously reported the club have £150 million to spend on midfielders thanks to extra money from qualifying for the Champions League.
That extra money could be vital for the club in their search to sign another winger, and potentially a full back or centreback.
