Manchester United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for an initial fee of £48 million and a further £2 million in add-ons, with Chelsea retaining a 10% sell-on clause.

Santos is announced as United's first signing under Michael Carrick, arriving as one of up to three new midfielders this summer.

United have also reportedly finalised terms on a transfer for Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans, who recently captained Belgium to the World Cup quarter finals and is due to undergo his medical on Tuesday.

The club had agreed a deal to sign Atlanta midfielder Ederson for an initial £35 million fee, although the transfer has been put to a complete stop after medical checks revealed issues United did not anticipate.

United announced the signing of Santos on social media on Monday afternoon, and the Brazilian was quick to explain that he has joined United because he wants to make his mark at an elite club.

"To be honest, since when I was young, I've dreamed of this moment, and now. The history, the responsibility that comes with this badge, that's why I'm here," Santos said.

"I can't wait to play in front of this fan, alongside this team, and help create new memories.

"I'm here to bring energy, to compete, to win the ball, drive the team forward, and give everything for this club. So I'm so happy to be here, and now, I'm gonna make my name in the history of this big, big club."

The 22-year-old also admitted that he cannot wait to start wokring under Carrick, who he believes could be the perfet coach to elivate his game.

“Everything about Manchester United is special; it is an incredible feeling to join a club that some of my biggest idols have represented," Santos continued.

“As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick, he is the perfect coach to help me take the next step in my career and push to achieve my dreams.

“Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is, and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”

There have been theories floating on social media suggesting that Santos had been signed as a replacement for Ederson once it became clear that the transfer would not be finalised, but reports suggest that this is not the case.

With Tielemans through the door soon and Santos due to start training with his new teammates this week, the club must now look to sign a third midfielder who is athletic and imposing in the middle of the park.

Edersno stands tall and strong, while Tielemans and Santos are tidy passers but lack the strength to match.

Carlos Baleba was well-liked by the club last summer, and although interest has not been as intense this time around, he may be the perfect player left for United to be one who can eat up ground and understand the Premier League.
