Where should Rashford go?
Marcus Rashford's Manchester United career had a fairy-tale beginning when the boy from Wythenshawe announced himself with a brace on his debut in a Europa League match against FC Midtjylland, before netting another brace on his Premier League debut against Arsenal just days later.
From then on, it looked like his career would inevitably blossom at Old Trafford, but with many managerial changes, new signings and other difficulties, Rashford suffered, and his United career did, too. His 2022/23 campaign was by far his best, scoring 30 goals under manager Erik ten Hag, but he struggled to recapture this form afterwards.
When Rúben Amorim was appointed as United manager in 2024, a new system and culture forced Rashford out, with the academy graduate admitting he was ready for a new challenge. Rashford then joined Unai Emery's Aston Villa on loan for the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, where he performed well. Then, in the summer, Barcelona completed a deal to sign Rashford from United on loan for a season with an option to buy the player for £26 million.
Rashford reacted brilliantly to the move, seemingly settling well in Barcelona, adapting to the league and showcasing his talent in La Liga and in the Champions League. With 14 goals and 14 assists in all competitions, Rashford proved himself a valuable member of the squad, providing a versatile backup option for the Spanish Champions.
Barcelona choose not to activate buy option
Despite a positive season in Spain, Marcus Rashford looks set to return to Manchester this summer if a move is not finalised before the end of the World Cup. The Englishman is currently away with the national team in the USA for the 2026 World Cup, where he is a big part of Thomas Tuchel's squad, wearing the number 11.
Rashford's future looked certain, but a surprise move for Anthony Gordon by Barcelona has potentially made this more complicated. Gordon left Newcastle United to join the Spanish Champions at the end of last month, with a deal being completed for a fee of around £70 million. It has also been widely reported that Barcelona have informed Manchester United of their intent to not activate the £26 million buy option for Rashford. However, they remain interested in the player, with another loan being their preference, according to Fabrizio Romano.
This decision came as a shock to the football world, after Rashford had made it clear of his intention to stay at the club beyond this summer. Although Barcelona remain interested in keeping Rashford, United could stick to their asking price, which opens up the door to more possibilities.
A return to Manchester United looks to be off the table, but with Michael Carrick being offered the permanent manager's job, could things change? Bayern Munich show interest in Rashford
According to Tyrone Marshall of the Manchester Evening News, Marcus Rashford could be offered an alternative to Barcelona this summer, with German giants Bayern Munich showing 'serious' interest in the player.
Marshall claims that Rashford was ‘blindsided’ by Barcelona's decision to not activate the buy clause this summer. It has also been noticed that Rashford has removed Barcelona from his Instagram profile and changed his profile picture to a recent photo taken during England's World Cup training camp.
His England teammate Anthony Gordon recently completed a move to The Blaugrana, potentially casting out Rashford. Before the move to Spain materialised, Bayern Munich were strongly interested in Gordon and were seemingly leading the race for his signature. Bayern are keen to add another attacker to their frontline to provide depth and competition for Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise.
Rashford's enormous wages could be an issue for any club but it was obvious that he was willing to take a pay-cut last year to make the move to Barcelona happen. This may have to be the case again, but if that issue is resolved, Rashford could emerge as a serious option for the Bundesliga champions, which could be a good move for his career.
