Manchester United have always found it difficult to replace legendary goalkeepers. When Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar left the club, respectively, the holes they left at the back ended up plaguing the club.

The same was the case when David de Gea left the club in 2023. Despite a season where he picked up the golden glove award, since 2018, it had been a steady decline for the shot-stopper full of mistakes, and it was clear he needed to depart. 

André Onana was brought in as Erik Ten Hag's main man and was fresh off a scintillating Champions League campaign with Inter Milan. However, his two years at the club were marred by mistakes, and he was ultimately replaced by Altay Bayandir. 

Even then, Bayindir had shown he was error-prone. The arrival of Senne Lammens proved to be a turning point for the club, with the Belgian cementing himself as the clear number one with his consistent performances.

At the end of the transfer window, Onana headed to Trabzonspor on loan, where he seemed to excel and return to his best form. He made 40 appearances as his side finished third in the league.

The highlight for the Cameroonian was a penalty shootout in the Turkish Cup, where he saved three penalties in a row to send his side to Trabzonspor. 

The shot-stopper had won the love and adimration of the Trabzonspor fans and heirachy alike which has led to him rejoining the club on loan for the next season. 

However, recent reports from Tyrone Marshall have suggested that Onana wanted to stay at United, believing he could win back the number one spot. But despite his desire to return was denied by the club, which informed his camp of their plans.

Alongside Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Jadon Sancho have all left the club. While Hojlund's deal is the only one to bring in major cash for the club to spend, overall, a huge chunk of the wage bill has been removed for future investments. 

Due to Manuel Ugarte's long-term injury, he is set to stay at the club while he completes his rehabilitation. While Marcus Rashford's future is up in the air, it seems as though he may stay at the club. 

As for other players, it seems Joshua Zirkzee, after links with a move away all of last year, could be the next player likely to leave

While Mason Mount is another option to go, the club would then have no cover for Bruno Fernandes or another option in midfield to play with Kobbie Mainoo, even if Mount struggles with injury.

It seems as though the club are running out of options for players they could move on to raise money.
