Ex-Manchester United player and Treble winner, Jaap Stam, has recently urged his former club to try yet again to sign fellow Dutchman, Frenkie de Jong, this summer.
It looks as though the Manchester United and Frenkie de Jong saga is about to be ramped up one last time this summer after Jaap Stam has hailed his brilliance so far during his career at Barcelona.
It is no secret that he is a player that Man United have admired from some time now, however, they have never seemed to be able to get his signature.
When Barcelona were struggling financially, he said no; when United signed his old boss, Erik ten Hag, he still said no, and when rumors spread that his camp were trying again to move him to Manchester, he still said no.
However, with the player being in his seventh season at the Camp Nou, he may be open to a change, therefore, it will be interesting to see where he sits on United's midfield shortlist this summer.
Despite suffering injuries during his time at Barcelona, de Jong has still managed to play almost 300 games over seven years. When spending big on a player, they have to be available to play, and it seems like Frenkie ticks that box.
Jaap Stam on Frenkie de Jong
As relayed by Metro, Stam has explained why he believes de Jong is a must for the Red Devils this summer, given their need to replace Casemiro and potentially Manuel Ugarte.
"Frenkie de Jong would be the ideal player for Man United, I think, to help them out because he’s so good on the ball.
"We can discuss his physique in the Premier League, maybe, because if you go into one-vs-ones or the tackling part of it and the physical part, then of course he’s not the biggest, but he’s a very good player.
"And I think looking at Michael Carrick, how he wants to play, he also wants players who can control the game with the ball at their feet and be very dominant. Then you don’t need to defend very much.
"But Frenkie, yeah, he’s a world-class player. He’s one of the best midfield players there is, and he’s very comfortable on the ball, especially playing out from the back and dictating that and helping the team out to go forward and get into the final third to score goals.
"So, if the opportunity was there for United, I would help them out. I’ll go on my bike to Barcelona and bring him to United, no problem."
Should United sign Frenkie de Jong this summer?
While there are reasons for United going in for him again this summer, as highlighted by Jaap Stam, the arguments against are much greater.
A huge argument against the signing is the success of players such as Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, two players who make it very clear week in week out that they are grateful to be at the club, resulting in top quality performances on the pitch.
Another issue is Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo has had a complete resurgence under Carrick this season, earning a new contract and prompting many fans to want the team built around him. Therefore, adding in a player with such a similar profile could be highly detrimental.
Furthermore, there are many players such as Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, who are much more defensive-minded, that could work alongside Mainoo. And with their experience in the league, they will definitely sit higher on United's transfer list.
There is absolutely no doubt that Frenkie de Jong is a fantastic player and could be a great addition to the United squad, however, United fans thrive off of players with passion for the club, and they certainly will not forget his multiple snubs in the past.
