Former Manchester United manager José Mourinho is set to take over at Real Madrid this summer.

The Portuguese manager is set to replace Álvaro Arbeloa, who has endured a turbulent spell at the Bernabéu since taking over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Mourinho won three trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including the League Cup and Europa League. He also guided United to a second-place finish during the 2017/18 season, an achievement he has described as 'one of the greatest of his career'.

Since leaving United at the end of 2018, Mourinho has managed Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, Fenerbahce and Benfica.

Mourinho keen on signing Dalot

Real Madrid are said to be keen on signing a back-up right-back this summer.

According to Diario AS, Mourinho loves Diogo Dalot as a potential back-up right-back option for Los Blancos.

Mourinho was the manager who brought Dalot to Old Trafford in 2018, signing him from FC Porto for a fee in the region of £20 million.

The former United boss publicly expressed his admiration for Dalot during their time together in Manchester.

"Everyone can see the potential, and everyone could see he's a 19-year-old player who has more than 10 years to play for Manchester United," Mourinho said when speaking about Dalot back in 2018.

Dalot endured a difficult start to life in Manchester, mainly due to injuries, but since returning from his loan spell at AC Milan in 2021, the Portugal international has made over 200 appearances for United over the last five seasons. He also won Player's Player of the Year on one occasion.

United cannot let Dalot go

Dalot is one of the most underrated players in the United squad.

He is a player who is well-liked by the managers he plays under, given the fact that he has been a crucial player for all of Ralf Rangnick, Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick during their tenures at the helm at United.

Dalot is an outstanding progressor of play and shines in particular when given license to invert into midfield during build-up. This is how Ten Hag used Dalot, which led to him arguably playing his best football in a United shirt.

In addition to his ability on the ball, Dalot is also an outstanding athlete, and that is of immense value given the lack of athleticism in the current United squad.

He is also strong in duels, both on the ground and in the air, and is good at defending his back post from crosses. He is also rarely injured nowadays and is one of the biggest leaders in the current squad.

In the attacking phase, Dalot does have limitations, but he is one of the best full-backs in Europe, and United find it hard to find a replacement who is better, should they let Dalot go.
