If you were to go back a week from now and ask fans what they think of Manchester United's window so far, it is more than likely you would have been met with abject negativity.

The club missed out on primary targets such as Elliot Anderson, Matheus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali, with all three going on to join direct rivals.

However, just one week on, the Red Devils have since secured the signature of Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos for a fee of £48 million plus a further £2 million in add-ons, as well as having secured a £35 million deal for Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans. Both deals were only struck within five days of each other. 

With United's transfer window now appearing to be in full swing following a rocky start, it is now said that Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell will further look to add to the centre of the park this summer in an already growing revamp of the squad's midfield.

A more athletic defensive profile potentially being what the recruitment team will look to identify next.

Whilst the recent additions of Santos and Tielemans will certainly go a long way in bolstering Michael Carrick's midfield options ahead of what will be a busy season for the Reds after securing Champions League football, United don't appear to be done just yet.

According to a report from The Athletic, a third midfielder signing could soon be on its way to Old Trafford, with names such as Alex Scott, Felix Nmecha, Carlos Baleba and Sander Berge being considered by United as it surveys the transfer market.

Carlos Baleba, in particular, is a player United have shown long-term interest in, enquiring about the midfielder last summer, so it will be interesting to see whether United revisit the potential deal.

However, after an underwhelming season from the Cameroonian and a potentially extortionate price tag, United may be forced to look elsewhere.

Alex Scott also remains a target United are reported to be keeping tabs on, but once again, the price tag of £85 million placed on the midfielder by Bournemouth may force Scott out of the picture, which looks as though it may be the same story for Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund, who reportedly values the German at around £100 million.

With United's midfield still lacking some real physicality and mobility, this will most likely be the type of profile the club will look for when searching for their third marquee midfield signing.

Although Alex Scott's quality is undeniable, coming off the back of a tremendous breakthrough season at Bournemouth, his profile may not fit United's current squad.

Scott is a player who often likes to venture forward more and control the game with his press resistance and quality to pass and drive with the ball, rather than cover ground and involve himself in defensive duels, a very similar style to that of Kobbie Mainoo, whom United will not want to further stunt the growth of.

Felix Nmecha could be quite an exciting proposition for United, a very well-rounded midfielder with a tall frame and athletic ability who could prove ideal for what United are looking for.

However, with the Bundesliga not necessarily the most reliable place to acquire talent and his humongous price tag, United will likely have to look elsewhere once again.

In regard to Sander Berge, he ticks many boxes for United, being Premier League-proven, specialised in defensive actions, and likely not commanding a large price tag. However, he is a drop-off in quality compared to other targets, where United will likely want their third midfield signing to be their best.

And finally, once again, we are left with Carlos Baleba. Objectively, he ticks most of the boxes United require, specialising in defensive actions while also possessing great quality on the ball; it would make sense for the club to revisit their interest in the player this summer.

Albeit, this will ultimately be dependent on the valuation quoted by Brighton after previously being priced out of a move to Old Trafford a year ago, as well as whether United still view the player as a viable option following a subpar season at Brighton.
