High demands from Newcastle have forced the Red Devils to abandon their pursuit of Sandro Tonali, shifting focus toward Elliot Anderson to fill Casemiro’s void at Old Trafford.
Manchester United's search for midfielders has gotten off to an exciting start after the £35 million deal for the 26-year-old Brazilian, Ederson. However, it is almost certain that Carrick and the club's higher-ups will want to bring in at least two more recruits sooner rather than later.
After the departure of Casemiro, the Red Devils will be desperate for another player to come in and take over the role that the 34-year-old bossed towards the end of the last campaign.
It will be large shoes to fill, and it would not be surprising if the individual brought in to do so takes time to adapt.
Elliot Anderson has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for the past few months, although the most recent reports suggest that United are distancing themselves from signing the player following City's £121 million bid for him.
A few names have been linked with a move as a backup plan for Anderson, but United have seemingly dropped out of the race for one of the biggest names rumoured.
United drop out of the race for Sandro Tonali
Sandro Tonali's spell at Tyneside has been full of controversy since his move back in 2023, but it has seen the Italian become one of the most highly rated midfielders in the Premier League.
The 26-year-old has made 79 appearances in the top-flight of English football, and has become a fan favourite amongst Newcastle supporters. He has garnered attention from some of Europe's top teams, including Premier League champions Arsenal.
However, according to Football Italia, United's interest in Tonali has been lost due to the midfielder's hefty price tag.
The higher-ups at Old Trafford are unwilling to pay the amount Newcastle are demanding for one of their star players, despite regarding him as one of the league's top talents.
This reluctance to overpay ultimately removes United from the transfer race altogether, and they will be looking to set their sights on another midfielder for a slightly smaller price tag.
Should United break the bank for Tonali?
INEOS' transfer strategy so far has been mostly effective, and they will be hoping this transfer window brings in players who can have the same impact as last year's summer signings.
Tonali seemingly fits the mould perfectly for an INEOS signing, as the Italian international has Premier League experience, whilst also being young enough to be a player who could last at Old Trafford for many seasons if successful.
However, Tonali has somewhat of a controversial past, serving a gambling ban upon his move to the Toon three years ago, and has been plagued by injuries during his time in England. This inconsistency is perhaps why United don't feel he is worth the price tag that Newcastle are setting for their man.
The replacements brought into United will determine whether or not dropping out of the race for Tonali was a clever move or the owners of the club not digging deeper into their pockets at the right time.
