Manchester United have been handed a major blow in their pursuit of a new midfielder this summer.
Manchester United's summer transfer window will be focused on revamping the club's midfield.
Casemiro will leave at the end of the season upon the expiry of his current contract, while Manuel Ugarte is also likely to leave after a difficult two seasons at Old Trafford.
Elliot Anderson is United's top priority, but Manchester City seem to be leading the race to sign the midfielder. Nottingham Forest is expected to demand a fee in the region of £125 million, which could prove to be a major obstacle for United.
Sandro Tonali is a name that was high on United's shortlist, but various factors now mean that the deal is currently unlikely.
Carlos Baleba remains prominent amongst the thoughts of decision-makers at Old Trafford after the club already attempted to sign him last summer. United have continued to follow Baleba's progress this season closely and reportedly value him at £50 million.
Aurélien Tchouaméni has also recently emerged as a top target for United.
Tchouaméni expected to extend contract at Madrid
United are reportedly following the situation of Tchouaméni very closely ahead of the summer, but rumours are circulating that the France international will extend his contract at the Bernabéu.
According to CaughtOffside, should Real Madrid let him go this summer, they would demand a fee in the region of £60-70 million for what they consider to be one of the best midfielders in the world.
However, Madrid's plan as of now is very much to extend Tchouaméni's contract, with his current deal set to expire in June 2028.
Talks over a new deal are yet to begin, but negotiations are expected to commence once the season ends, with Madrid confident he will be staying in the Spanish capital.
United need to go all-out for Tchouaméni
If Tchouaméni is indeed attainable for around £70 million, that is simply a deal United have to do. In this current market, which is outrageously inflated, that fee for a player of that quality is exceptional value for money.
It is understandable why United and Manchester City are so keen on Anderson. He is an all-action midfielder who excels both with and without the ball, but Forest's potential asking price of in excess of £120 million is simply too much money.
United need to sign at least two, preferably three, midfielders this summer and will therefore need to allocate funds wisely.
Tonali is another player who would significantly improve United, but the cost of that deal makes it now unlikely. Newcastle would reportedly want around £100 million, while rumours have claimed Tonali's preference if he were to leave St. James' Park would be a move back to Italy.
United's £50 million valuation of Baleba is also likely to make any deal for the Cameroonian difficult. It is unknown how much Brighton and Hove Albion would demand, but considering a price of well in excess of £100 million was quoted last summer, it's hard to believe they would accept half of that this summer, despite Baleba's inconsistent form this season.
