Michael Carrick’s pursuit of a marquee midfielder faces stiff resistance as Real Madrid digs in, while staggering wage demands threaten to derail a potential blockbuster summer deal.
Manchester United concluded their 2025/26 Premier League season in style with a convincing 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium in what was Michael Carrick's first match in charge following the announcement that he will lead the side going into next season, having signed a two-year deal.
The side will now turn their attention to what promises to be a pivotal summer transfer window. Significant changes are expected across the squad, with midfield identified as a key area for reinforcement.
Following Casemiro's confirmed departure and growing uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte's future at Old Trafford, United are expected to strengthen the midfield with as many as three new signings this summer, including one marquee addition.
In the midst of chaos at Real Madrid, Aurelian Tchouameni has emerged as the potential marquee signing this summer, following an alleged bust-up with team mate Federico Valverde, which has encouraged Man Utd to monitor the situation closely.
Two Problems that affect a potential deal
Man Utd look like they have almost finalised a deal for their first midfield signing of the summer, with talks over Atalanta's Ederson seemingly at a very advanced stage.
Despite being touted as a "dream" signing for Manchester United, Fabrizio Romano has identified two major problems in United's pursuit of the highly rated French midfielder.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said, "Today, first, Florentino Perez speaks. Real Madrid president, obviously, there is the elections, but at the moment, he is still the president, and everyone believes he is gonna be [continuing].
“And the feeling with Aurelien Tchouameni has been clarified by Florentino Perez himself. He said, ‘I think Aurelien Tchouameni will stay at the club this summer, absolutely, definitely.’
“Then Tchouameni goes to [the] press conference and says, apart from what was in the media about the fight, we have the common target to win titles.
“So also Tchouameni sending a good message to Real Madrid and their fans.
“For Manchester United, Aurelien Tchouameni is kind of the dream target. Manchester United believe Tchouameni could be the perfect player in midfield to replace Casemiro.
“Coming from the same club – Real Madrid – winning mentality, top player, international, can defend and score goals. So they love Tchouameni.
“But there are two problems. The first one is the salary, which is a huge salary. The second is that Real Madrid keep saying that their intention is to keep Tchouameni.”
Man Utd need to act quickly in the market
Going by the reports, the players seen by Man Utd as marquee signings include the likes of Elliot Anderson, Tchouameni and Sandro Tonali, who could all end up costing north of £100 million this summer.
The problem that United have is that Madrid are very keen to keep hold of Tchouameni, while Anderson looks destined for a move to Man City, despite some speculating that Pep Guardiola leaving the club could scupper the club's transfer plans for the summer.
With those two names now seemingly off the table, it's important that United act quickly in trying to secure the signing of Sandro Tonali, or other marquee midfield targets.
United simply have to get this summer window right, with there being a real opportunity next season to do something special, and could mount a real challenge for the Premier League if they get their targets through the door.
