Jason Wilcox’s academy ties and homegrown status give United the upper hand as they target the £86m Borussia Dortmund star to solve a looming midfield crisis.
Manchester United are expected to make midfield reinforcements their top priority during the summer transfer window.
The Red Devils have struggled whenever either Casemiro or Kobbie Mainoo has been unavailable, highlighting a lack of quality and depth in central midfield. Those shortcomings have been further exposed when players such as Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount have been asked to operate in deeper roles.
More changes are anticipated in the coming weeks. Casemiro has reportedly agreed a move to MLS outfit Inter Miami, while Ugarte's future at Old Trafford has been thrust into uncertainty after picking up an ACL injury at the World Cup, potentially ruling him out for the entirety of next season.
With several departures on the horizon, United are expected to be among the busiest clubs in the transfer market. Reports claim Michael Carrick could be backed with as many as three new midfield signings before the summer window closes as he continues to reshape his squad for the new campaign.
Having already agreed a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, United are now expected to target a marquee addition in the centre of the park, as well as another player capable of providing valuable depth ahead of the club's return to Champions League football next season.
Man Utd's Felix Nmecha advantage
After missing out on the likes of Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, United are set to shift their attention to another list of midfield targets, including players from across the continent.
One such name is Felix Nmecha, who, after impressing for Borussia Dortmund, shone for Germany at the World Cup, not leaving him short of suitors over the summer transfer window.
Speaking on the United! United! United! YouTube channel, Mark Critchley, a football writer for The Athletic, revealed that United are targeting both Alex Scott and Nmecha, and also shared a big advantage that Man Utd hold over other clubs, such as Chelsea, who are targeting the German midfielder.
He said, "The two names I’ve heard most prominently are Alex Scott at Bournemouth, there’s been contact from United to explore the parameters of a deal, and the problem is Bournemouth are very insistent that they do not want to sell… the other name is Felix Nmecha.
"He knows Jason Wilcox well, being a former Manchester City academy player, and there’s potential for him to fit the homegrown quota, which is an issue United face this season.
"There’s reports in Germany of his fee being over £86m. I don’t think that’s dissuaded United; there’s a sense that Dortmund are a sensible club and are often a selling club.
"Those are two names I’ve heard more so than others, I would say."
Felix Nmecha or Aurélien Tchouaméni?
Jason Wilcox was Manchester City's academy manager for a six-year period spanning from 2017 to 2023, and helped oversee Nmecha's development before the 25-year-old left to join Wolfsburg in 2021.
Reports also indicate that he could be available for around £85 million, a fee similar to what Real Madrid could demand for Aurélien Tchouaméni, who could be sold by the Spanish giants to help fund a summer rebuild of their own.
After United missed out on their main midfield targets, the top remaining names look to be Alex Scott, and the aforementioned duo, but with Bournemouth inflating their star player's price due to the fees seen already in the transfer window, INEOS could be better suited looking across Europe for their marquee signing.
While Nmecha is a more dynamic box-to-box option than Tchouaméni, Manchester United still needs an out-and-out defensive option to fully replace Casemiro's role in the side.
Tchouaméni is the superior defensive option, and signing the Frenchman would be a real statement signing by INEOS, and would add great experience to the side despite being just 26 years old.
