Perhaps the worst-kept secret has been that United are looking to sign three new midfielders in the summer, with one of them being a marquee signing who is ready to play for the club week in week out.

Newcastle, who had Champions League qualification aspirations going into the season, could be forced to sell some star players to avoid financial complications.

As reported by Corriere della Sera, Sandro Tonali is 'up for sale' at Newcastle, and is seen as the big name that has to be sold to balance the books at the club.

The outlet reports that Manchester United and Manchester City are the clubs leading the race to sign the highly coveted Italian midfielder, but City's pursuit of Elliot Anderson could put United in a much stronger position for Tonali than their rivals.

They also report that the 26-year-old would be available for £87 million, following previous reports of a rumoured £100 million fee.

As well as three midfielders, United will also target reinforcements at left-back and left wing, so it is crucial that INEOS get their signings right this summer with the budget they have ahead of a Champions League campaign.

While United look set to miss out on Elliot Anderson, the signing of Sandro Tonali may be the better option in the grand scheme of things. While the saying is usually quality over quantity, United need to find a middle ground when it comes to their midfield targets.

Spending a majority of the midfield budget on Anderson, who could reportedly cost as much as £120 million, simply doesn't make sense for United. It is rumoured that the club are ready to spend £150m on three midfielders, so leaving £30m to sign another two midfielders is just not good business.

The signing of Tonali, followed by the signings of midfielders such as Carlos Baleba, Atalanta's Ederson, or West Ham's Mateus Fernandes would be much better spending of the rumoured £150 million budget.
