Manchester United have scouted exciting Bosnian winger Kerim Alajbegovic, a surprise target amid midfield focus.
Manchester United's frontline was completely transformed last summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško to address a distinct lack of goals in the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.
The trio have contributed 25 goals in the league this season, elevating United to third in terms of goals scored with 56, just five off Arsenal in first, a far cry from last season, when they mustered just 44 league goals, the fifth worst total last term.
With the success of the forward line, the side's transfer priorities are set to be shifted to the midfield, a position that needed depth last season, but has been made all the more apparent with Casemiro's departure at the end of this season, as well as the uncertain futures of Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes.
Man Utd open talks for 18-year-old Bosnian winger
Though the midfield is the right area to focus on this summer in terms of transfers, United still need a lot of depth across the board in preparation for a likely return to the Champions League, as well as deeper runs in domestic competitions.
Last summer, United let go of five forwards and brought in just three to replace them. Four of these forwards were wingers: Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, and Jadon Sancho.
Michael Carrick has previously stated that the club would be looking for left-wing depth in the summer, and according to Bosnian outlet, Reprezentacija.ba, United have opened talks with Kerim Alajbegovic about a move.
Fresh off the bat of scoring in back-to-back penalty shootouts against Wales and Italy that sent Bosnia and Herzegovina to just their second ever FIFA World Cup, Red Bull Salzburg winger Alajbegović has attracted interest from clubs around Europe, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Aston Villa all reportedly showing interest in the 18-year-old.
With United set to focus a lot of their budget on bringing in a marquee midfield signing, the club will have to conduct shrewd business to bring in much-needed depth across the pitch, and a £26 million bid is reported to be enough to sign the talented left winger.
One potential problem in negotiations is that Bayer Leverkusen, who sold the Bosnian to Salzburg last summer, have already announced that they will be re-signing the 18-year-old owing to a buy-back clause that was inserted in the sale.
Is there a way back for Rashford?
Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona last summer on a season-long loan, with the agreement including a £26 million option to make permanent.
The 28-year-old has adapted to life in Spain well, scoring 11 and assisting 13 across 40 appearances in all competitions this season for the Catalan giants.
Despite £26 million being a low fee considering Rashford's performances this season, there is still no guarantee that Barcelona will trigger the buy option, with reports indicating that the Spanish club may look to loan the winger for another season rather than sign him permanently, potentially opening the door for a dramatic return to Old Trafford.
Although a return would certainly be welcomed by much of the Old Trafford faithful, Barcelona's unwillingness to make the deal permanent could allow for United to fetch a higher fee for the Englishman, with reports showing that long-term admirers, PSG could submit a bid of around £44 million for Rashford, adding further funds that United need this summer to pursue their transfer targets.
