Manchester United are aiming to rebuild their midfield this summer following the departure of Casemiro.

United have already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta and are now in talks with West Ham United over a deal for Mateus Fernandes, although Tottenham Hotspur have seemingly overtaken United in the race for the Portuguese midfielder. Various reports claim that Spurs are prepared to outbid United, and as it stands, the Reds have no intention of meeting West Ham's asking price of around £80 million.

Aurélien Tchouaméni is another player United are very keen on, but Real Madrid have not yet opened the doors to his exit, and it is currently unknown how feasible a deal is.

Alex Scott is also said to be on United's shortlist, but Bournemouth currently have no intention to sell him, and the Cherries are in talks with the English midfielder over a new contract.

With a deal for Fernandes now uncertain, United are preparing to ramp up their pursuit of Felix Nmecha.

According to Sky Germany, United are intensifying its efforts to sign the Borussia Dortmund midfielder.

Christopher Vivell, United's head of recruitment, is in close contact with the 25-year-old's representatives.

Top clubs such as Manchester City, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are also closely monitoring the situation.

Nmecha has a contract at Dortmund till 2030, and the report from Sky Germany claims that Dortmund see the Germany international as a key player. A transfer would therefore only be possible if a very high offer was made.

It is becoming increasingly more important that United need to do everything possible to get a deal over the line for Mateus Fernandes.

Tchouaméni would be the dream signing, but there is no certainty that he will become available during the course of this transfer window.

United have already pulled out of deals for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali due to the costs involved. 

The chances of signing Nmecha don't look very good either, given the fact that Dortmund are in a very strong negotiating position due to his long-term contract.

Having already missed out on multiple top targets, United have to ensure they beat Spurs in the race for Fernandes, even if it means going above their valuation of the player.

United must get this midfield rebuild right, and the list of options is dwindling.

Staying disciplined in negotiations is crucial, but ensuring you land your top targets is also very important. If United miss out on Fernandes, having already missed out on multiple top targets, it sets a very bad tone for the rest of the window.
