Manchester United appear to be considering moves for EFL stars this summer. Perhaps due to Michael Carrick's input.
Manchester United's summer transfer window is sure to be one of the busiest in recent years for the Red Devils, as they have to add to the squad upon their return to the Champions League.
Last summer, United cleared house as Rúben Amorim failed to qualify for any European competitions. This left fewer people unhappy about game time, but it makes the need for new additions this summer even more crucial.
United have had to deal with several defensive injuries this season, meaning that could be one area of focus this summer, although not the priority due to the midfield situation.
With Ayden Heaven and Lisandro Martínez at left-centre-back, and Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro on the right, a first-choice central defender may be an unnecessary signing. A backup, however, could be a smart acquisition.
United target Leicester City's Ben Nelson
Having already been linked with Southampton's Shea Charles for this summer, it appears United are now moving down the football pyramid and eyeing Leicester City's Ben Nelson.
Leicester were relegated to League One at the end of the Championship season, meaning they will play tier three football next season, despite winning the Premier League just 10 years ago.
Mail Sport have reported that 22-year-old Nelson is one of several players, including Charles, being assessed as potential backup options for next season.
Perhaps Michael Carrick is behind some of United's interest in EFL options, with his only other managerial experience outside of Old Trafford being at Middlesbrough in the Championship.
United could play over 60 games next season. They are guaranteed at least eight more due to the Champions League league phase, while they will also be hoping for an improvement on their first-round exits in the Carabao and FA Cups.
Do United need more young defenders?
Nelson would likely be a cheap signing for Manchester United if he were to join the club this summer, but is he actually a necessary signing?
United already have Heaven and Yoro as first-team regulars, who are both still developing and younger than Nelson, too.
Nelson is a left-footed centre-back who can also play at left-back, but again, United have Heaven and Godwill Kukonki, who are very similar profiles. Not to mention Dan Armer, Harry Amass and Diego Leon in the academy as other options, too.
United making more EFL signings makes sense, on the whole. But signing Nelson seems unnecessary.
