How many midfielders do United NEED this summer?

Who Manchester United sign and sell this summer could very well be the set of stories that dominate football headlines across the 2026 summer transfer window.

With a return to the Champions League firmly in their grasp, the English football giants are looking to add some of the best talent from across the planet to their squad, with an emphasis on midfield reinforcements.

The club are expected to smash at least £200 million in spending across the next few months, with other areas such as left-back, left-wing, and striker also possible areas for improvement.

However, to raise funds and create adequate space in the squad, the club are also aware that some of their current crop will need to be moved on.

Eight almost certain to leave this summer

Amid various reports, there are eight players still on United's books who look almost certain to leave Old Trafford in the summer. One confirmation has been Casemiro, who announced that he would be departing once his contract expires this June.

In fact, Casemiro's contract would have been automatically extended if he were to start every remaining fixture of the campaign, but all parties have decided to void this clause.

Many also expect Tyrell Malacia to head out of the door once his current deal expires, while Jadon Sancho, on loan at Aston Villa, will have to find a new club, as The Athletic have stated United have no intention of triggering his one-year extension.

Meanwhile, United duo Altay Bayındır and Manuel Ugarte both appear set to be shipped out of Manchester this summer.

Second-choice goalkeeper Bayındır has no hope of dethroning Senne Lammens in net and is almost certain to move back to Turkey, while Ugarte is likely to be moved on to create space for up to three new midfield incomings.

United fully expect Napoli to trigger Rasmus Højlund's £39 million option to buy this summer, while Barcelona are likely to do the same for Marcus Rashford at a further £26 million.

André Onana, currently on loan at Trabzonspor, is said to have still not given up hope on his United career, but as far as United are concerned, the 29-year-old has no future at Old Trafford and will be sold permanently upon his return.

A further four could still leave

Even though eight first-team exits are a fairly high number of Reds to replace, there are still four more who may depart Old Trafford should they or the club believe their futures lie elsewhere.

One player who will have to consider his future is Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutchman has been a victim of United's lack of game-time in the last eight months, having played just 546 minutes across 20 appearances this season – an average of 27 per game.

UtdDistrict understands that Zirkzee's representatives have once again held talks with AS Roma ahead of a possible move this summer after close contact during the winter window.

Mason Mount is another who may find himself on the preferred next season, particularly if Bruno Fernandes remains and a number of new midfielders are signed. Fernandes is another who could leave, given the £57 million release clause in his deal.

Finally, it is also worth keeping an eye on Toby Collyer. The 22-year-old has just one year left on his contract, with loan spells at West Brom and Hull City littered with injury issues this season. The club could look to move him on.
