Manchester United faced a huge rebuild this summer due to the lack of midfielders at the club. Kobbie Mainoo and Mason Mount were the only midfielders remaining at the club because of Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's injury. 

Despite Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson being the number one targets, the club lost on players for huge fees to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, respectively.

However, the club responded with the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and Carlos Baleba from Brighton. 

While Santos was a key member during pre-season and started the first game of the season, Tielemans has started both opening fixtures and seems to be a key starter for Michael Carrick.

Leon Goretzka has always been a player who has been linked to Manchester United at almost every stage of his career.

Before joining Bayern Munich, he was eyed up by United as a youngster at Schalke before joining the German giants, where he would go on to win seven league titles and the Champions League. 

After being unable to renew his contract with German giants, the midfielder was let go and was one of the most high-profile names on the free agency list. At the end of the summer, he made the move to Aston Villa to replace Tielemans, but things could have been different.

According to James Ducker at the Telegraph, the club eyed up the German after the deal to sign Éderson collapsed, until they were made aware of the release clause in Tielemans's contract. After this, the club swiftly completed a move for the Belgian captain, and now he has become an integral member of the squad. 

While he is slowly getting back up to speed following an extended break after playing in the World Cup, Tielemans oozes class, and his technical brilliance is there for all to see. Goretzka is without doubt a brilliant player, but the Belgian fitted the system better. 

For all the deserved criticism about not signing a left-back or a striker, Manchester United have done an excellent job with the midfield rebuild. 

As we have seen so far, Tielemans has been pivotal in the way the club tries to build up from the back as he collects the ball from any area, both under pressure and finding space for himself. 

Both Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba fit the requirement for defensive-minded players, but both offer very different profiles, which is essential for United going forward in terms of not becoming one-dimensional.

Santos has a calmness about him when progressing the ball that Tielemans has, but his IQ and intensity always put him in the right areas to win the ball. Whereas Baleba is the duel-winning monster the club has needed for years. 

Ultimately, we will not know until the end of the season how successful they end up being, but the signs are promising.
