With Victor Osimhen as the dream target and veteran free agents under consideration, United seeks the perfect goalscorer to bolster an attack already transformed by summer arrivals.
Do Manchester United need another striker
Last Summer, United underwent a complete overhaul of the attack. The likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony all departed on loans and transfers, respectively.
The club then bought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who have all impressed in their debut seasons for the club.
Each forward registered ten goals each in the Premier League, which is only the second time three new signings have done that since Arsenal in the 12/13 season, according to Opta.
Despite the success of these forwards, the club are still in need of forwards, whether that is an out-and-out left winger or a back-up striker.
Osimhen tops the list
With Joshua Zirkzee's future up in the air, it is no surprise to see the club look to sign an improved option to compete with Sesko. Caught Offside have revealed a potential shortlist for strikers.
It is no surprise to see that Victor Osimhen tops the list for the club as the dream target. Even when he moved to Galatasaray, he not only blitzed the league with 15 goals but also impressed in the Champions League with seven goals. However, the Turkish side will want a fee similar to that of Benjamin Sesko and is unlikely to go for it.
Another expensive option on the list was Eli Junior Kroupi, who has impressed for Bournemouth, especially since they lost Antoine Semenyo. However, his price tag will again cause issues.
As a result, the three other options look more viable for different reasons. Dusan Vlahovic and Robert Lewandowski are both free agents that United could pick up to serve as back-ups to Sesko. Yet due to their free agent status, it may make wage demands quite high.
Finally, the most sensible option in terms of fee and wages could be Jean-Philippe Mateta, who will be available on a cut-price fee and offers Premier League experience.
United can afford to wait
A back-up striker is certainly needed with Joshua Zirkzee lacking the prolific instinct the club need if Sesko is not in the side.
However, aside from midfielders, the club need to prioritise their left-hand side. It is unlikely Luke Shaw is going to be able to play every game as he has done this season. Therefore, a left-back needs to be high on the agenda.
As for the wing position, Cunha is not a natural wideman, and there are questions as to which flank Patrick Dorgu is preferred on or if his future is at full-back.
If United did not get a back-up striker, it is not the end of the world with Cunha and Mbeumo proven options to fill in. Plus, the Club still have Rashford on the books, so he could be that versatile option the club needs in the forward areas.
