Shea Lacey has been in and out of the Manchester United first-team matchday squads since the beginning of 2026.

My thoughts on Shea Lacey from Old Trafford

Manchester United are known for producing promising academy talent, many of whom go on to have a career at Old Trafford. Shea Lacey could be the next one.

Lacey made his senior debut against Aston Villa in the Premier League under Rúben Amorim - the same game where Bruno Fernandes was forced off through injury, meaning Lisandro Martínez partnered Jack Fletcher in midfield - but it Lacey's performances against Burnley and Brighton which really caught the eye.

The 19-year-old was dismissed for two yellow cards against Brighton, but was one of United's better performers in Darren Fletcher's last game in charge of the first team.

Since then, Lacey has been named on the bench for Michael Carrick - against Fulham, Leeds, Chelsea and Brentford - but has been crucial for the under-21s. After his senior red card, Lacey has netted eight goals in just seven games for Adam Lawrence's side, while he has also picked up three assists.

Premier League Two works in a playoff system at the end of the season. United's 4-3 win against Manchester City on Friday evening, in which Lacey scored and assisted, means they will face Brighton and Hove Albion in the final.

Lacey linked with summer loan

Lacey may find it difficult to find game time between now and the end of the season, due to the final and the players ahead of him on the right flank, but United appear to have already made plans for his next campaign.

According to Alan Nixon, as reported on his Pateron page, United are ready to loan out Lacey, with a queue already beginning to form for the talented wide player.

Clubs in the Championship and League One are believed to be interested, while interest from the Scottish Premier League has also been mentioned.

United have not been shy to Scottish loan moves recently, with Jacob Devaney and Ethan Williams on loan their this season, and both impressing, too.

Is a loan the right thing for Lacey?

The most talented United youngsters usually remain at Old Trafford, rather than spending a season away from the club, although that is not always the case. For example, David Beckham spent 1995 at Preston North End.

With Lacey, though, he seems like the type of player who should stay at the club. He has already proven he can compete for minutes in the first team. He is not there on a whim; he has earned those opportunities.

Amad and Bryan Mbeumo have struggled for form in a United shirt at times this season, so with the return to the Champions League, Lacey could be a good addition.

Alternatively, a loan move could help Lacey's development as he should be playing week in, week out against full-time professionals.

It is a tough call, but there is no doubt, he is a promising player.
