Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has refused to be drawn into reports that William Osula could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, dismissing speculation from Denmark surrounding the striker’s foot injury.

Osula has already missed Newcastle’s last two matches after picking up the problem during the opening-day 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park. Initial reports suggested the 23-year-old would be unavailable for at least a couple of weeks, but claims from Denmark subsequently suggested that his injury could be more serious than first feared.

Those reports raised concerns that Osula could potentially remain out beyond Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures against Bournemouth, Leeds and Hull, as well as the Carabao Cup meeting with Millwall.

However, Jaissle was asked directly about the speculation during his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s visit of Bournemouth, and the Newcastle boss made it clear that he would not participate in what he described as rumours.

“I don’t know if the Danish journalists have more information than I have,” Jaissle said. “I doubt that, so I will not be a participant in these rumours or information from the Danish journalist.”

While the German did not provide a specific return date for Osula, his comments will offer some reassurance that Newcastle are not currently working on the assumption that the forward has suffered a major injury.

Jaissle had already been asked about the fitness of Osula, Dan Burn and Joelinton and explained that all three players were progressing, although at different rates.

“Everyone is progressing well, but everyone also differently, due to their injuries,” the Newcastle head coach explained. He added that the club’s medical department was working intensively with the injured players in an effort to get them back as quickly as possible.

The uncertainty surrounding Osula comes at a particularly interesting time for Newcastle. The striker had become an increasingly important part of the squad during the latter stages of last season and was expected to provide competition in an attack that has undergone significant change during the summer.

With Nick Woltemade departing for Juventus and Yoane Wissa hitting form a year after arriving from Brentford, Newcastle have plenty of attacking options, while the deadline-day arrival of Matias Fernández-Pardo has added another exciting young player to Jaissle’s forward line.

Fernández-Pardo is fit and training with the squad, although Jaissle has indicated that the £45m signing is likely to be eased into Premier League football rather than immediately handed a starting role. The Newcastle boss highlighted the youngster’s speed and versatility but stressed the importance of managing his workload after a period without completing 90 minutes.

That makes Osula’s recovery another subplot worth watching as Newcastle prepare for Bournemouth.

The Magpies enter Saturday’s lunchtime fixture unbeaten after collecting four points from their opening two league matches. Following the late disappointment of conceding against Liverpool, Jaissle’s side produced an impressive 2-0 victory away at Tottenham, with Anthony Elanga and Wissa finding the net.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, arrive on Tyneside still searching for their first league victory of the campaign.

For Jaissle, the immediate priority is therefore maintaining Newcastle’s positive momentum rather than becoming distracted by unverified injury reports.

Osula’s eventual return remains unclear, but the message from the Newcastle head coach is straightforward: the club are monitoring his recovery, and there is currently no reason for Newcastle supporters to accept the more alarming reports as fact.

For now, Osula remains sidelined, but Jaissle has firmly refused to put a timeframe on his absence or endorse claims that the injury is significantly worse than initially expected.
