Thomas Tuchel played it safe at Wembley, leaving the Newcastle standout on the bench to protect his fitness as the Three Lions stumbled against clinical world champions.

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall was an unused substitute as England suffered a 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley, with the defender’s recent recovery from injury seemingly limiting his involvement in Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Hall had been included in Tuchel’s 27-man England squad for the opening Nations League fixtures after making a strong start to the campaign with Newcastle. However, his preparations for the meeting with Spain were disrupted when he missed England training on Wednesday because of a knock.

The 22-year-old subsequently returned to training, with reports confirming that England’s revised squad had trained together on Thursday. His return was an encouraging development for both England and Newcastle, although Hall remained a doubt for the Wembley encounter.

Ultimately, Tuchel opted not to risk the Newcastle defender, instead selecting Nico O’Reilly at left-back in England’s starting XI. Hall therefore watched from the bench as England produced an entertaining performance against the reigning world champions but ultimately fell to a narrow defeat.

England initially found themselves behind after Lamine Yamal capitalised on an error to put Spain ahead. The hosts responded impressively, with Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon scoring to level the contest before Harry Kane put England ahead before half-time.

Spain, however, responded after the interval. Kane missed from the penalty spot before Alex Baena equalised, with Mikel Oyarzabal subsequently scoring the decisive goal to complete Spain’s comeback and secure a 3-2 victory at Wembley.

For Hall, the evening was another reminder of the importance of managing his return carefully. The Newcastle defender had only recently recovered sufficiently to rejoin England training following his knock, making his omission from the matchday action understandable given the wider international schedule.

Newcastle will have particular interest in Hall’s fitness following the international break. The Magpies are already managing a number of injury concerns under Matthias Jaissle, while fellow Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento withdrew from the England squad earlier in the week because of injury.

Hall’s inclusion in the England squad represents another significant step in his development. England Football confirmed his selection for the September and October Nations League window, with the defender returning to the senior setup after missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad.

The Newcastle academy graduate has established himself as an important player for the Magpies and earned his senior England recall through his performances at club level. England’s official player profile lists Hall as a Newcastle United defender and records four senior caps.

While Hall was unable to add to that international appearance tally against Spain, the priority will now be ensuring he is fully recovered before returning to competitive action. With England facing further Nations League fixtures against Czechia and Croatia during the current international window, there should still be opportunities for Hall to feature if Tuchel considers him ready.

For Newcastle, however, the bigger concern will be seeing their young left-back return from international duty fully fit and ready to continue his development under Jaissle.
