Jürgen Klopp secures his first victory as national boss as the Newcastle defender anchors a reshaped backline, stifling Serbia’s attack to preserve a dominant Allianz Arena clean sheet.
Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw played his part as Germany secured their first victory under new head coach Jürgen Klopp with a convincing 2-0 Nations League victory over Serbia at the Allianz Arena.
Thiaw started at centre-back alongside Waldemar Anton as Klopp made significant changes to his Germany side following the disappointment of their previous international fixture. The Newcastle defender was given responsibility in a reshaped defence and produced a composed performance as Germany kept Serbia scoreless throughout the contest.
Germany dominated from the opening whistle and controlled the match for long periods. The hosts registered 16 shots during the first half alone, while Serbia failed to record a single attempt, underlining Germany’s superiority during the opening 45 minutes.
Despite their dominance, Germany had to wait until the 39th minute to break the deadlock. Tom Bischof provided the breakthrough, finding the net to reward a sustained spell of pressure and give Klopp’s side a deserved 1-0 lead heading into half-time.
Thiaw’s role was particularly important in allowing Germany to maintain their high defensive line and aggressive approach. The Newcastle defender was involved in Germany’s build-up play and was willing to step forward when possession was recovered, fitting into the demanding style Klopp has looked to implement since taking charge.
The 25-year-old also came close to adding his name to the scoresheet late in the match. With Germany already leading 2-0, Thiaw rose to meet a cross in the 81st minute, but his header was saved by Serbia goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.
Germany doubled their advantage in the 61st minute through Florian Wirtz. Maximilian Mittelstädt carried the ball forward before finding Wirtz, who finished from inside the area to put the result beyond Serbia’s reach.
For Thiaw, the clean sheet represents another useful international outing as he continues to establish himself within Klopp’s plans. One German assessment highlighted his willingness to step forward during build-up play, aggressive defending and several timely recoveries.
The result also represents an important milestone for Klopp. Germany’s victory was his first since taking charge, coming in his third match as head coach after a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and a 1-0 defeat to Serbia. The DFB confirmed that the victory delivered Germany their first three points of this Nations League campaign.
Klopp was clearly pleased with the performance afterwards, particularly Germany’s intensity without the ball. The former Liverpool manager praised the team’s gegenpressing and said he was happy with the performance from beginning to end.
For Newcastle supporters, Thiaw’s involvement will be another encouraging sign following his move to Tyneside. Starting against Serbia and helping Germany record a clean sheet provides valuable international experience for a defender who is expected to play an important role for Newcastle.
With Germany now preparing to face Greece in Thessaloniki on Sunday, Thiaw will hope his performance against Serbia strengthens his position in Klopp’s plans and gives him another opportunity to impress on the international stage.
