The Magpies are tracking Rennes’ breakout defensive star as they plot a long-term backline overhaul, facing stiff competition for the imposing Mohammed VI Academy graduate.
Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on highly-rated Rennes central defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal as the club continues to assess options for the future of their defence.
Newcastle are monitoring the 20-year-old Morocco international and his development in Ligue 1, with the Magpies understood to be considering their options at centre-back ahead of 2027.
Ait Boudlal has emerged as one of the more interesting young defensive prospects in French football since moving to Rennes. Born in Marrakesh in April 2006, the 1.90m right-footed defender was developed at the renowned Mohammed VI Football Academy before moving to Rennes in 2024 and signing his first professional contract.
His development has already attracted significant attention. The Guardian named Ait Boudlal among its selection of the best young players in world football born in 2006 in 2023, while his performances at youth international level helped establish his reputation as one of Morocco’s promising defensive talents. And put him on Newcastle’s radar.
Rennes’ own profile of the defender highlights how quickly his career has progressed. After a loan spell with Amiens during the second half of the 2024/25 season, Ait Boudlal returned to Rennes and made his Ligue 1 debut against Marseille. He subsequently became an increasingly established member of the Rennes first-team setup.
His international progression has followed a similar path.
Ait Boudlal was a prominent figure for Morocco at youth level, including captaining the Under-17 side and featuring at the 2023 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. He has since progressed into the senior Morocco setup, earning his first senior international involvement in 2025.
There is also evidence that interest in his services is already building. Fulham had a €30million bid rejected for the defender earlier this summer, while Everton, Brentford and Hull are among the other English clubs understood to have been monitoring his situation. Clubs from Germany, Spain and Italy are also reportedly tracking the player.
For Newcastle, the reported interest would fit with a continued focus on identifying younger players capable of developing into significant first-team contributors.
Ait Boudlal’s physical profile is certainly attractive for a Premier League club. Standing at 1.90m, he offers a strong presence at centre-back, while his development at the Mohammed VI Academy and subsequent experience in France have given him a grounding in possession-based football.
His current campaign has also provided further first-team experience. Having made 21 appearances for Rennes across the 2025/26 season, including 20 Ligue 1 appearances, while he has continued to feature during the opening stages of the 2026/27 campaign.
At this stage, Newcastle’s interest should be viewed as monitoring rather than evidence of an imminent transfer. There is no indication that a deal has been agreed, with Rennes likely to have significant leverage given the player’s age, international status and growing interest from clubs across Europe.
Nevertheless, Ait Boudlal is now firmly emerging as a name to watch.
With Newcastle assessing their defensive options looking towards 2027, the Morocco international could become an increasingly prominent candidate if the club decides to add another young centre-back to its squad.
For now, the Magpies appear to be watching his progress closely, but with Premier League competition already developing around the Rennes defender, his situation could be one to monitor closely over the coming months.
