The Magpies are ditching long-haul tours for a high-profile clash at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield. Discussions are underway for a massive domestic showdown against Everton in the Scottish capital.

Growing reports suggest that Newcastle United could be set for a high-profile pre-season clash at Murrayfield Stadium this summer, with discussions understood to be underway over a glamour friendly against Everton.

According to multiple reports emerging on Wednesday, Newcastle are exploring the possibility of staging a major warm-up fixture in Edinburgh as preparations begin for the 2026/27 campaign. The proposed venue is Scotland’s national rugby stadium, Murrayfield, which holds more than 67,000 supporters and has increasingly been used for major football events in recent years.

The reports, first linked to claims from The Chronicle and widely circulated across Newcastle fan outlets, suggest club officials are keen to organise a marquee domestic encounter closer to home rather than embark on another long-haul summer tour.

Newcastle have spent recent pre-seasons travelling extensively across Asia and the United States, but there has been growing indication in recent months that the club would scale back overseas commitments ahead of the new season. Reports earlier this spring stated that the Magpies had chosen to base much of their summer preparations in Spain at La Manga, prioritising football preparation and player recovery over commercial tours.

A fixture at Murrayfield would likely attract strong support from both clubs, particularly given Newcastle’s sizeable fanbase across Scotland and northern England. The stadium has previously hosted football internationals and showcase matches, with organisers viewing Edinburgh as an attractive neutral location capable of drawing a large travelling crowd. With the journey from Tyneside to Edinburgh taking only 90 minutes by train. with easy links from the west coast for Everton Fans.

While neither club has officially confirmed the fixture, speculation has intensified following reports that discussions are at an advanced stage. Newcastle are also believed to be considering additional high-profile friendlies as part of a revamped pre-season schedule ahead of another demanding Premier League campaign.

Supporters have reacted enthusiastically online, with many seeing the potential encounter as an opportunity for thousands of Scottish-based Newcastle fans to watch Eddie Howe’s side without travelling to Tyneside. Everton supporters are also expected to travel in significant numbers should the match receive final approval.

An official announcement is anticipated in the coming weeks as clubs across Europe begin finalising their summer schedules.
