Following a masterclass against Tottenham, the Spaniard’s elite distribution and composure have Toon fans convinced their new £52 million anchor surpasses the departed Italian maestro.
Newcastle United supporters have wasted little time drawing comparisons between new signing Nico González and former midfielder Sandro Tonali, with some fans already suggesting that the Spaniard could prove to be a serious upgrade on the Italian.
González arrived at St James’ Park from Manchester City in a deal worth around £52 million and was immediately handed a major responsibility in the Newcastle midfield following the departures of Tonali and Bruno Guimarães.
While comparisons after just one Premier League appearance should naturally be treated with caution, González’s first league outing in black and white has certainly given Newcastle supporters plenty to be excited about.
The 24-year-old started against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and produced an assured performance as Newcastle secured an impressive 2-0 victory in London. His range of passing was particularly noticeable, with González helping Newcastle move the ball quickly from deeper positions and repeatedly looking to exploit space behind the Spurs defence.
His cross-field distribution also played a role in Newcastle’s opening goal, with Anthony Elanga eventually finding the net after a move that highlighted the Spaniard’s ability to switch play.
That performance has fuelled a growing debate among Newcastle supporters.
Tonali, of course, remains a hugely popular figure among sections of the Toon Army, but his move to Tottenham during the summer brought an end to his time on Tyneside. The Italian’s return to face Newcastle was always going to attract attention, and Saturday’s result only intensified the comparisons.
González completed 48 of his 51 passes against Spurs, according to figures highlighted in post-match analysis, while Tonali struggled to match that level of accuracy for Tottenham before being substituted.
For Newcastle, the significance goes beyond a simple statistical comparison.
González was signed because manager Matthias Jaissle wanted greater control, composure and physicality in the centre of the pitch. Jaissle previously described the midfielder as bringing “serious quality and elite experience”, while also praising his ability to carry the ball, remain composed under pressure and contribute defensively.
Those qualities were evident at Tottenham.
The Spaniard looked comfortable receiving possession under pressure, showed confidence when attempting longer passes and appeared increasingly influential as the match progressed. Most importantly, he looked like a player capable of giving Newcastle’s midfield a different dimension.
That is why some supporters are already questioning whether Newcastle have actually lost something by allowing Tonali to leave.
It would be premature to declare González the superior player after a single league match. Tonali enjoyed some outstanding moments during his Newcastle career and remains a midfielder with considerable ability. González, meanwhile, still has to prove that he can maintain his level consistently across an entire Premier League season.
However, the early signs are extremely encouraging.
González has arrived from Manchester City with Premier League experience, having made 59 appearances for the club after joining from Porto.
More importantly, he appears to have settled immediately into Jaissle’s system.
Newcastle supporters wanted a midfielder capable of helping the club move forward after a summer of significant change. Following his debut at Tottenham, many believe they may have found exactly that.
Whether González ultimately becomes an upgrade on Tonali will be determined over the coming months.
But after just one league appearance, the debate has already begun, and Newcastle fans certainly seem to like what they are seeing.
