The versatile defender returns to the grass following a devastating calf injury in Kansas City, handing Matthias Jaissle a vital boost ahead of the new campaign.

Newcastle United have been handed a major boost with Tino Livramento back in training as the England international continues his recovery from the calf injury that ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup.

Livramento suffered the injury while training with England in Kansas City shortly before the tournament got underway. The 23-year-old subsequently underwent medical assessments which confirmed that he would be unable to take part in the competition.

It was a particularly cruel blow for Livramento after he had battled his way back into contention for England following an injury-disrupted campaign with Newcastle.

The right-back had missed the final weeks of Newcastle’s previous season before making himself available for England’s World Cup squad. His hopes of appearing at the tournament were then ended by the calf problem suffered during training.

Newcastle subsequently confirmed that Livramento underwent a minor surgical procedure to address the injury. At the time, the club said that he was expected to return during pre-season, providing some optimism that the issue would not keep him out for an extended period.

However, his recovery has taken longer than initially hoped.

Livramento has missed Newcastle’s pre-season campaign and has been working on his rehabilitation away from the first-team group. Earlier this month, he shared images of himself continuing his recovery work in the United States, accompanied by an hourglass emoji which appeared to suggest that his return was getting closer.

Now, his return to training represents an important step in that process.

The timing will be welcomed by new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle, who will be keen to have one of his most versatile defenders available as quickly as possible.

Livramento’s ability to operate on either flank gives Newcastle valuable tactical flexibility. His pace, athleticism and ability to carry the ball forward have made him an important part of the squad since his arrival from Southampton, while his defensive development has also seen him become a regular contender for England.

The injury problems experienced by Livramento over the past year have, however, meant that Newcastle have had to manage his workload carefully.

The defender made just 17 Premier League appearances last season after suffering a series of setbacks, according to Reuters. That included two knee problems and a hamstring injury which kept him out for a significant period before the calf issue brought his World Cup hopes to an end.

His return therefore needs to be handled with caution.

Newcastle are unlikely to rush Livramento straight back into competitive action, particularly after such a lengthy period on the sidelines. Instead, his initial involvement is expected to focus on rebuilding match fitness and ensuring the calf is fully ready for the demands of Premier League football.

The development nevertheless comes at an important time for Newcastle.

The Magpies have already been dealing with questions over their defensive options ahead of the new campaign, making Livramento’s eventual return particularly significant. His versatility could give Jaissle another option as he looks to establish his preferred system and defensive structure.

While supporters may have to wait a little longer before seeing Livramento back in a competitive Newcastle shirt, getting him back into training is a major milestone.

After missing out on the World Cup through injury, the England international can now concentrate fully on making his return for Newcastle.

For both Livramento and Newcastle, the message is simple: the comeback is finally underway.
