Britt Assombalonga has discussed how he realised his "dream" of returning to Nottingham Forest.
Britt Assombalonga has revealed the dream that led him back to Nottingham Forest after being rejected as a child.
In a recent interview with FourFourTwo, Assombalonga discussed his career. Though he began his career with Watford, he revealed that, at age 14, he had a trial with Forest, but was unsuccessful.
The 10-time DR Congo international detailed that, despite holding no grudge against the club for his earlier rejection, he was determined to return to the club to prove them wrong.
"I’d actually been on trial at Forest when I was 14 and, while it didn’t work out, the club left a massive impression on me," he admitted.
"I’d always dreamt of going back and proving them wrong," he added. "Not that I ever held it against them – these things happen – but I felt I had unfinished business there."
City Ground memories
The City Ground, over the years, has been a formidable place for teams to travel to, despite the Reds' recent struggles at home.
Reflecting on his experiences of playing on Trentside, Assombalonga recalled excellent memories of the world-famous City Ground.
"The City Ground is amazing, honestly," the 33-year-old said. "When the crowd is behind the team, and the place is rocking, there are few atmospheres like it."
During his time with Forest, from 2014 until 2017, Assombalonga was no stranger to meetings with fierce rivals Derby.
He faced the Rams twice at the City Ground, and scored in the first such appearance.
It was those games, he recalled, which produced the best atmospheres at the City Ground, occasions which he still remembers fondly.
"Especially when we played Derby," he said. "I can always remember how fierce the atmosphere was in those games due to the history between the clubs and the fact they’re so close.
"I really felt like I was playing for a massive club that had historical importance to English football. I loved my time at Forest, and I’m really proud to have scored the goals I did there."
Back where it all began
Now aged 33, Assombalonga is playing for Harborough Town FC, who compete in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football.
It is the non-league pyramid where he got his first taste of senior football, having joined Wealdstone on loan from Watford way back in late 2011.
He later also enjoyed a loan spell with Braintree Town in the National League, before taking a step up to join League Two Southend United, also on loan, for whom he scored 15 goals in the league.
Assombalonga most recently scored in Harborough's 3-1 FA Cup win over Spennymoor Town, to set up a first-round tie away to Leyton Orient.
