Confirmation of Zach Abbott's new deal as he completes a loan move to Southampton.
Nottingham Forest academy graduate Zach Abbott has penned a new contract with the club before heading out on loan.
The young defender was always expected to join an EFL side on loan, and Championship hopefuls Southampton won the race for his signature.
Mixed reports initially suggested that the Saints would retain an option to buy the 20-year-old, but that did not materialise.
Instead, Abbott completed a straight loan, as well as extending his existing contract with Forest.
The Reds confirmed that Abbott has signed a new four-year deal with Forest ahead of the loan move, extending his stay until 2030.
Abbott's "hunger to improve"
"I had memorable experiences last year that have given me even more hunger to improve and continue my development," Abbott said.
"This club has been my home for nearly 10 years, and I have a big sense of pride every time I pull on the shirt.
“It’s a great feeling to extend my contract further and now it’s about continuing to work hard every day and gaining as much experience as possible to put me in the best position to represent this Club for the years ahead."
A great example
Forest's Chief Football Officer, George Syrianos, spoke about Abbott's new deal, and spoke glowingly of his character and journey with the club so far.
“Zach has an exemplary attitude, and the Club and the supporters should be proud of the journey he has been on to get to this point," Syrianos said.
“Giving young academy players a clear and consistent pathway into the First Team is a key part of our new academy strategy.
"We want to challenge our best young players at the highest possible level as early as they are ready, giving them the opportunity to earn consistent minutes and gain the experience they need to establish themselves in senior football.
“Zach is a great example of that approach. He made his First Team debut as a 16-year-old and has shown continuous development with every opportunity and his desire to be at his best every day is a credit to himself.”
“We are proud he has joined a long list of successful academy graduates, and we are excited to see how he can continue to progress over the coming years.”
