Despite dominating clear-cut chances and rattling the woodwork, the Black Cats were forced to settle for a point as a standout goalkeeping display denied them a famous victory.

Régis Le Bris praised Sunderland’s resilience and defensive foundations after the Black Cats were held to a 0-0 draw by Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland created the better openings and came closest to finding a winner, but were unable to turn their chances into a goal against a United side indebted to goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

The hosts started brightly and almost struck early when Noah Sadiki raced through from the halfway line, only for Lammens to deny him. The United goalkeeper was needed again before half-time, coming off his line to stop Brian Brobbey, before making another important save from the forward after the break.

Sunderland kept pushing and went close again late on when Brobbey set up Lutsharel Geertruida on the edge of the area, but his effort came back off the foot of the post.

Speaking to safc.com after the game, Le Bris admitted his players were frustrated not to take all three points.

“We created three or four big chances, so it should have been enough to score, but that wasn’t the case,” he said.

“The players are a bit disappointed in the dressing room, which is a good sign because we are in the Premier League after eight years.

“It was really demanding today against Manchester United, but I thought the lads did well.”

That disappointment reflected the balance of the game. Sunderland were not clinging on for a point. They had the chances to win it, and the frustration came from not finding the final action in a match where their structure and intensity gave them a platform.

Le Bris pointed to the final third as the area where Sunderland still need to grow.

“The final third is always the most challenging part of the pitch,” he said.

“When you have a young squad - and because the Premier League is so demanding - they are really focused on their defensive tasks.

“They are well connected with the way we want to play with the ball, but you need more quality in the final third and it is connected to experience.”

Sunderland moved onto 48 points with just two games remaining, continuing a campaign that has shown clear progress in the first season back in the Premier League.

Le Bris also felt the performance was an important response after defeat in their previous home game.

“After losing our last home game, today was important to get back to our foundations - defend our goal and make things difficult for our opponents,” he said.

“We can’t finish the season in a bad mood.

“We have been consistent this season and it is important to get back to our foundations.”

The focus now turns to Everton next weekend, with Sunderland looking to turn another strong performance into a victory. Le Bris believes the standards in training have remained high and wants his players to keep building.

“The last two weeks have been excellent - especially in terms of our work during the week - and it is about keeping those standards high,” he said.
