Andy Robertson returns to Anfield, and both Spurs and Liverpool hope to progress in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Tottenham Hotspur travel to Anfield on Tuesday night looking to secure a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and generate some badly needed early-season momentum, following back-to-back 0-0 draws in the Premier League.
The third-round tie against Liverpool kicks off at 8pm and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and Sky Sports Main Event. Spurs reached this stage by beating League One side Charlton Athletic 5-1 in north London, while Liverpool enter the competition at this round because of their European commitments.
So far,, the game against Charlton is the only time Spurs have found the net this season, and they hope to unlock Liverpool to not only progress in the tournament but also build momentum for Saturday’s fixture with Aston Villa.
Both teams approach the game following goalless Premier League draws at the weekend. Tottenham were held by Everton and remain without a league victory or goal after four matches. Liverpool drew 0-0 with Fulham and, although unbeaten domestically, have won only two of their opening five games in all competitions. The cup offers Roberto De Zerbi and Andoni Iraola a chance to reset the mood around their respective squads and use players in the squad who may provide much-needed boosts.
De Zerbi is expected to rotate following Saturday’s match, but Tottenham’s options have been reduced by injuries. Destiny Udogie is available again and could return at left-back, while Pedro Porro and Sandro Tonali have been ruled out. Dejan Kulusevski and Mykhailo Mudryk remain sidelined, and Richarlison will not be involved despite being eligible for the competition.
Former Reds left back, Andy Robertson will return to Anfield following a trophy laden run and could start ahead of Destiny Udogie.
Those absences could open the door for several younger players. Luca Williams-Barnett is pushing for a chance after impressing at academy level and during the summer tour, while Lucas Bergvall and Mathys Tel may also get important minutes. James Maddison, who made his return from injury against Everton, provides De Zerbi with another creative option. The England International not only needs minutes under his belt but also needs to be carefully managed to avoid any early breakdowns.
Liverpool are also likely to make changes during a difficult run of fixtures. Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to replace Alisson in goal, while Joe Gomez has returned to training and is available. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain absent, and Iraola is also monitoring Cody Gakpo’s fitness.
Anfield remains one of the toughest stadiums in English football, and Tottenham’s previous Carabao Cup visit ended in a 4-0 semi-final defeat in February 2025.
Progression would not solve every problem surrounding Tottenham’s difficult start, but a positive performance and victory could restore confidence before Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa and keep their hopes of winning silverware firmly alive.
