Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action on Saturday evening with a trip to Old Trafford, where Roberto De Zerbi's side faces Manchester United in a fixture carrying huge consequences for both managers.

Spurs sit bottom of the table after the opening five games, with just two points to their name. Three defeats and two draws have left supporters frustrated after a summer of considerable investment, with Tottenham still searching for their first league victory of the campaign.

Manchester United have endured their own disappointing opening five fixtures under Michael Carrick. The hosts sit 12th with five points from five matches, a stark contrast to the impressive second half of last season that secured their return to Champions League football under Carrick.

United have registered 113 shots and accumulated 9.89 expected goals across their opening five league games.

Tottenham's lack of goals remains Roberto De Zerbi's immediate concern, with Spurs failing to score in four of their opening five league fixtures, and their attacking performances lacking the creativity and final-third precision needed to turn possession into meaningful chances and importantly goals.

The international break has given De Zerbi a chance to work with players who stayed behind, by working on his tactical approach, improve their fitness, and for the Italian to assess his attacking options, particularly as several key players work towards full fitness.

James Maddison's availability could be huge if he stays fit. The England international offers the creativity and ability to play between defensive lines that Tottenham have frequently lacked this season. However, after missing some recent training sessions, his involvement from the start remains uncertain.

Dominic Solanke provides a recognised focal point in attack, while Omar Marmoush, Savio and Mohammed Kudus give De Zerbi different options to exploit Manchester United's defensive vulnerabilities.

Good news for Spurs as captain Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke are available after injury concerns during the international break.

Pedro Porro remains unavailable with a hamstring injury, potentially opening the door for Archie Gray to operate at right-back.

Manchester United have their own problems. Carrick confirmed that Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui will miss the encounter, leaving the hosts short of options in several positions.

However, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad have returned to training, while summer signing Carlos Baleba could make his competitive debut after featuring in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

United will start as favourites, backed by home advantage, but Tottenham will come into the game with several players returning to fitness following the extended international break.

My prediction: Manchester United 1–1 Tottenham Hotspur.
