Dejan Kulusevski returned from a serious knee injury, coming off the bench for his first appearance since May 2025.
Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Coventry City on Monday night. Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies lifted Roberto De Zerbi’s side off the bottom, as Spurs recovered from Jack Rudoni’s equaliser to claim three much-needed home points.
James Maddison marked his first competitive start since May 2025 with the goal that gave Tottenham a 1-0 lead at the interval. The midfielder struck after 14 minutes, collecting Mohammed Kudus’ pass and curling a superb effort from outside the penalty area beyond Carl Rushworth.
It was a moment of quality Spurs badly needed after a nervous opening, with Coventry showing their willingness to attack from the outset. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto threatened early as Frank Lampard’s side looked to exploit space behind the home defence.
Roberto De Zerbi had made five changes, bringing Maddison, Omar Marmoush, Andy Robertson, Micky van de Ven and Tosin Adarabioyo into his starting side. Maddison’s return provided the clearest reward, giving Tottenham creativity and a threat around the box.
However, the opening goal did not develop into a commanding advantage. Spurs reached the break ahead, with Coventry still firmly in contention and the contest far from settled.
Coventry equalised four minutes after the restart, punishing a poor start to the second half from Tottenham. Jan Paul van Hecke lost possession, and Jack Rudoni eventually forced his way through to finish from close range, cancelling out James Maddison’s opener.
Spurs restored their advantage in the 58th minute through Omar Marmoush’s first goal for the club. The Egyptian turned Milan van Ewijk before firing past Carl Rushworth from outside the box. Coventry protested after Marmoush caught Van Ewijk with an elbow during the turn, but VAR did not overturn the goal.
The visitors continued searching for an equaliser, keeping Tottenham under pressure as Roberto De Zerbi introduced fresh legs. Dejan Kulusevski’s late appearance brought a huge reception on his return from injury.

Ben Davies finally settled the contest six minutes into stoppage time, striking from the edge of the area to secure Tottenham’s first Premier League win of the season.
Tottenham travel to Chelsea on Saturday, 24 October, before hosting Crystal Palace on Saturday, 31 October, with both London derbies kicking off at 5.30pm.
A trip to Leeds United follows on 7 November, giving Roberto De Zerbi’s side more chances to build momentum after finally securing their first league win.
