Villarreal and United States Men's National Team right-back Alex Freeman is linked with a possible move to Tottenham Hotspur as Roberto De Zerbi continues to rebuild the club.
According to TEAMtalk, Spurs have been monitoring the Villarreal defender as they consider their options amid speculation surrounding Pedro Porro’s future. Tottenham have had to deploy England Under-21 Captain, Archie Gray at right back for most of this season following Porro’s latestness in returning from the World Cup and his injury. Gray, a natural centre-midfielder, has covered for the World Cup-winning right-back due to the exit of England International Djed Spence to Inter Milan.
Freeman’s emergence in Spain makes him an intriguing name for supporters to follow, especially as other clubs also watch his development. Whether that attention leads to anything more remains to be seen, but Tottenham will need cover at right back following Spence exit and Gray's preference for playing centre midfield.
Alex Freeman progressed through Orlando City’s academy before signing a homegrown contract in February 2022. After developing with Orlando City B, he made his senior debut in 2023 and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2025.
The right-back earned MLS All-Star and Best XI recognition, as well as the league’s Young Player of the Year award. He recorded six goals and seven assists in 42 Orlando appearances before joining Villarreal in January 2026, signing until June 2032. Internationally, Freeman made his United States debut against Türkiye in June 2025 and later earned selection for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad at the 2026 World Cup.
Freeman has made nine LaLiga appearances for Villarreal this season, including six starts, as he continues to establish himself in Spain. The American scored his first league goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Valencia and has also gained Champions League experience during his development with the club.
Pedro Porro signed a new Tottenham contract in June, reportedly committing until 2031 with an option for another year. The agreement strengthened Spurs’ position over the defender’s future, but has not ended speculation surrounding a return to Spain. According to TEAMtalk, Spanish giants, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid remain interested in signing him in 2027.
Tottenham host Crystal Palace on Saturday 31 October, with kick-off at 5.30pm at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Roberto De Zerbi’s side will aim to build on their victory at Chelsea and secure another Premier League win. Sky Sports will broadcast the London derby live.
