Tottenham Hotspur have finally left Stamford Bridge with three points and renewed belief after beating Chelsea 2-0 in a London derby that could prove a season-defining moment. For Roberto De Zerbi, the win further encouraged him that his side are building momentum after a difficult start to the campaign and a major summer rebuild.

After Monday’s win over Coventry City, Spurs faced a tougher test against their fierce rivals and came away with another valuable result. A Mike Penders own goal broke the deadlock before Mathys Tel delivered a stunning decisive second, with Cole Palmer’s dismissal compounding Chelsea’s frustration.

Yet Tottenham’s celebrations were tempered by concern over James Maddison, whose afternoon ended prematurely with an injury so soon after his return.

There will be time to assess that setback, but this was an evening for Spurs to savour: a clean sheet, consecutive league victories and a rare success at a ground that has so often brought them disappointment.

Tottenham produced an encouraging first half at Stamford Bridge but reached the interval without the goal their attacking play threatened. In heavy rain, Roberto De Zerbi’s side moved the ball confidently, with James Maddison helping them navigate Chelsea’s press and establish midfield control.

Chelsea nevertheless offered an early warning when Cole Palmer forced Antonin Kinsky into a diving save. Mohammed Kudus subsequently curled wide as Spurs began to create openings, before Omar Marmoush squandered their clearest opportunity in the 29th minute.

Andy Robertson combined with Mathys Tel down the left before finding Marmoush, whose close-range effort was saved by Mike Penders. It was a significant escape for Chelsea and another frustrating moment for Tottenham in front of goal.

Kinsky later denied Jordan Henderson after a loose pass invited pressure. Despite promising combinations and sustained possession, Spurs went into the dressing room level at 0-0, with their finishing letting them down.

Tottenham suffered an early setback after the restart when James Maddison was forced off injured, with Conor Gallagher replacing him. Chelsea threatened through Pedro Neto, whose effort Antonin Kinsky saved, but Spurs kept searching for a breakthrough.

It arrived in the 77th minute when Mateus Fernandes delivered a corner and Mike Penders, under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, punched the ball into his own net.

Chelsea’s response quickly unravelled. Cole Palmer, already booked following an altercation with Fernandes, received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Gallagher, leaving the hosts with ten men.

Mathys Tel then settled the contest in spectacular fashion. Collecting possession inside his own half, he surged forward, beat Chelsea’s defenders, and drove a low finish past Penders in the 87th minute.

Tottenham comfortably protected their lead in the closing stages, securing a memorable derby win and another valuable Premier League point, to the echoes of “Oh,Roberto De Zerbi” being sung by the Tottenham faithful.
