Djed Spence Open To Liverpool Move
Aug 6, 2026 11:00 AM

The versatile defender could swap North London for Anfield as the Reds seek urgent cover for an injury-hit backline following his standout performances at the World Cup.

Djed Spence is being linked with a possible move to Liverpool, and reports suggest the Tottenham Hotspur defender would be open to joining them this summer.

Liverpool are reportedly looking at Spence as they weigh up defensive signings before the transfer window shuts. Sources say the England international would be “extremely receptive” to joining the Reds if they make a formal offer.

Spence, coming off an excellent World Cup, could fit in well at Anfield and compete with both Milos Kerkez at left-back and Jeremie Frimpong, adding real depth to The Reds' full-back area under new Head Coach Andoni Iraola.

Darren Lewis spoke with Last Word On Spurs this week, and he expects Spence to be transferred before the deadline instead of staying for another season in North London.

“I will be staggered if the window closes, and Spence is still a Tottenham player.” Liverpool are rumoured to be showing interest in the versatile full-back, and Lewis believes if The Reds made a move, then Spence will want to go.”

This news comes after earlier reports that Liverpool liked Spence’s ability to play on both sides of defence. His versatility could help Liverpool as they try to strengthen a backline hit by injuries and uncertainty at right-back.

Conor Bradley is likely to miss the start of the new season with an injury, and Jeremie Frimpong had trouble finding his best form last year. Joe Gomez also picked up a muscle injury in pre-season, so Liverpool may need more defensive options.

Spence played 44 times for Tottenham last season and was picked for England’s 2026 World Cup squad. He featured in eight games at the tournament and got one assist; his reputation rose dramatically following the tournament. However, his position in Roberto De Zerbi’s preferred Tottenham side remains uncertain, with World Cup-winning right-back Pedro Porro seen as the starter and new signing Andy Robertson and Destiny Udogie likely to be the preferred choices at left-back.

While Spence’s flexibility is useful for the squad, he may want more regular playing time at 25 and after several excellent World Cup performances, mainly at left-back.

As mentioned in our earlier article, Expectation Of Djed Spence Moving This Summer, Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath said Tottenham expected clubs to approach them about Spence before the window closes.

“I would expect some bids to come in for Djed Spence by the end of the window,” McGrath said during an appearance on Last Word on Spurs.

McGrath also said there had “always been an expectation” that Spence might leave this summer, and Italian clubs, including both Milan teams, are watching his situation.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that the club intends to sell players only at the highest possible price as part of a sustainable financial strategy. While Tottenham does not need or wish to sell Djed this summer, the club may consider a significant offer. Tottenham and Liverpool are already discussing a possible transfer of Cody Gakpo, so an agreement for Spence could be reached quickly if all parties are satisfied.
