James Maddison’s availability has given Tottenham a major boost as Roberto De Zerbi’s side prepare to host Crystal Palace on Saturday night live on Sky Sports. After successive victories over Coventry City and Chelsea, concern over the midfielder’s fitness threatened to take some of the shine off Spurs’ improving fortunes.

His early withdrawal at Stamford Bridge was an unwelcome sight for supporters who have watched injuries repeatedly interrupt his progress. Having recently reminded Tottenham of his quality, another absence would have represented a frustrating setback for both player and head coach.

However, speaking at Friday’s press conference, De Zerbi delivered a reassuring update: “James is available.”

That confirmation offers fresh encouragement ahead of another London derby, although managing Maddison’s workload remains a priority for Spurs' medical department.

The Italian head coach was speaking at his friday press conference, confirming, "James is available. Tosin is still out, Bergvall, Mudryk and Savio (as well).

James Maddison’s season has been a gradual process of rebuilding fitness and rediscovering his influence after a lengthy injury absence. A shoulder problem sustained against Brentford on the opening day interrupted that progress, forcing him to miss three matches.

His breakthrough came against Coventry City, when he made his first competitive start since May 2025 and scored the opening goal in Tottenham’s 3-1 victory. He started again in the subsequent 2-0 win at Chelsea, impressing before being withdrawn early in the second half.

De Zerbi has always been a big admirer of the England International, even including him with the matchday squads last season despite not being availble to play; his influence in the dressing room was key to Tottenham securing their Premier League survival.

The Italian Head Coach spoke further on the attacking midfielder, “This week, Maddison didn't work like the other players, but, for tomorrow, he is available.

“He is a special player for us - a special player because he has unique characteristics, different than everyone. Maybe just Xavi Simons is very close with him, but he is injured, or Deki Kulusevski can play as a 10, similar to James.

“He special for the characteristics, for the experience, for the personality, but we can play with Marmoush as a 10 or with Conor Gallagher as a 10. We played already with Mateus Fernandes, even he is better as a playmaker, but it is not important I think the characteristics of the players, the most important is to put the players in the right position for them.

"I think for James or anyway for the players who are coming from injury, long injury, you have to work more than the other players, but he is already four or five weeks working very hard and consistently. So, I think it is not a problem if you lose two days.”

James Maddison began his career at Coventry City, progressing through the academy before joining Norwich City in 2016. A loan spell at Aberdeen helped his development, while an outstanding Championship campaign with Norwich earned him a move to Leicester City in 2018.

He became one of the Premier League’s leading creative midfielders, helping Leicester win the FA Cup in 2021. Maddison made his senior England debut in 2019 and was selected for the 2022 World Cup squad. He joined Tottenham in June 2023.

Crystal Palace arrive at Tottenham sitting 17th in the Premier League, with seven points from eight matches following a difficult start under Pierre Sage. Defensive frailties have been particularly damaging, and the Eagles have conceded 19 league goals.

Consecutive defeats against Brighton and Newcastle, losing 5-0 and 2-0 respectively, have increased scrutiny on their manager. However, Wednesday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup victory at Fulham provided welcome encouragement, with Eddie Nketiah securing their passage into the quarter-finals.

Palace must now translate that cup response into league improvement, having last tasted Premier League victory against Nottingham Forest earlier this month as pressure continues to mount.

Tottenham host The Eagles, aiming to build on successive victories over Coventry and Chelsea. James Maddison’s availability strengthens Roberto De Zerbi’s options against a Palace side struggling defensively.

Destiny Udogie will also be in contention for a return to action following injury.
